Most likely. ITG under Dr. Price was negotiating likeness rights with each player (or their estate) and where they could not reach an agreement, they used the jersey. The change certainly suggests that Leaf has lost use of those likenesses.

If they have been off all sets since then, then the agreement with the families probably ran out.

Do note, though, that there are some inconsistencies. They use Jagr's pic in most releases, but there are some where they have just the cartoon jersey. I assume some of those are design decisions if he is on a card with other players they do not have the rights to.

great question, I also would like to know the difference between using a blank jersey with only a number , and the logo with a persons name. Such as on the fantastick 4 that features Ovechkin/McDavid

It must have something to do with trademarks.

For a lot of players, they have the name on the back of the jersey... others are blank. I'm guessing that either the player (or UD? the league? the PA? team? someone....) has some kind of exclusive right to use that jersery / name / number combo. Drop the name, and those blank jersey are okay.

Likely someone took it a step further with McDavid.

As for Beliveau & Plante images being gone (the OP) - I'd bet that agreements have run out.... and either Leaf or the estates simply chose to not renew them, or UD paid some money for an exclusive.

a UD exclusive seems odd to me though. I don't think they're doing GU cards of Plante, at all, and I'm not sure that Beliveau is still get much in the way of UD cards either.

Upper Deck seems to be loaded up with photo shoot jerseys of modern players with very little else. And with their designs seemingly so easily modified or faked, if there is one with one of these older HOF players that pops up you question whether its even real. Ill take the "unlicensed" but genuine game used memorabilia from Leaf vs "licensed" Upper Deck photo shoot material any day, it doesn't matter to me if the players face is on the card or not.

Yeah, this is what I mean though.....

For Leaf to use Plante's image (for example) they would need to have an agreement in place with his estate. They pay the estate $X to license a particular image(s) that it holds the rights to.... at least that's how I believe this would work.

So if they're no longer using images of Plante, I assume it's because they're no longer paying any kind of licensing fee to his estate. I would assume one of two things must be true:

1. Leaf no longer wants to use his images
2. The estate no longer wants Leaf to use his images

I can't imagine why the first one would be true, so I have to assume it's the 2nd. Why would the estate not want to take Leafs' money?

Well, the only reason I can think of - is because Upper Deck offered them more $$$, but wanted it to be exclusive.

I just can't see why Upper Deck would do that. They've produced two cards of Plante (so far) in 2019-20. They must have gotten a hold of a GU Stick.... as he was in Engrained in 2018-19, and Chronology. Prior to those 18-19 cards, he was used three times for cut signatures between 2011 & 2016.

Jaques Plante just doesn't seem like a player that UD would be trying to lock down an exclusive with. They've produced fewer than 100 cards of him, ever.

I hear what you're saying. And you could be correct. Another possible angle to this is that Leaf feels that varying the layouts is more appealing than running with either a pic or a printed name label the same way every time on every card with said player. Maybe shaking it up a bit for variety.

Wow. if Upper Deck has only produced around a 100 Plante cards I am even more grateful that I pulled this years a long time ago.
