Lockout effects on hobby

Actually, the 04-05 lockout was a bit of a boon for hockey cards. Upper Deck put out 2 products which IMHO became two of the best sets to collect. Legendary Signatures is an amazing set, with autographs of a group of former players, from 4th line guys, to HHOF legends. Legends Classics was another great product, also with some really cool inserts, like the pennants, jacket and jersey redemptions. There were many hours spent at my LCS, busting wax of these products. Don't get me wrong, I hope there is no lockout, or at least, a short one. But if the season does get cancelled, and with Panini in the hobby now, I would be really curious what the manufacturers come up with.

I only hope that if there is a lockout that Panini stay away from the rookie draft redemption thing that they are doing for basketball...or at least tweak it to an Artifacts-style team rookie redemption.

Last time they had a lockout older inserts really heated up. I would think it would be the same if it happened again this time. Collectors would put a strong emphisis on older want list or tracking down older cards that the once enjoyed.

The harsh side of a lockout is its affect on all those people who will lose income until its resolved and I'm not referring to the players and owners. Given the economy, it seems that people are much less sympathetic for either side this time around. Here are two groups with considerable incomes whose squabble is inflicting great difficulty on so many people.

With regards to the hobby, the recovery after the 04/05 lockout was, no doubt, hastened by the hype surrounding Crosby and Ovie. Much the same way as baseball benefited from the Ripken streak following its lost season. This time is different. Casual hobbyists and fans may simply walk away out of lack of interest.

well if you think it was taking long to get your redemptions filled now, we'll have to wait longer for them to sign now. Can't see them caring much to sign.

I absolutely LOVED legends classics and Legendary signatures from 04-05 during the lock out. UD could still due some nice sets with retired players if there was to be a lockout. I sure hope not though, I couldn't imagine a winter here in Portland with no hockey to watch...MISERABLE!

Don't forget the ITG Franchises set from 04-05, which is one of my favorites. I would actually be quite happy if the strike means there would only be the standard UD set and maybe 1 or 2 oldtimers product, I don't mean saving the money...it also means more money for football products, which looks to be a good year this year.

with no new wax to bust you will see more people spending money on older singles and finishing up sets. I remember 04/05. It was frustrating with no hockey but I got to catch up with all the past releases.

Hope this helps
