So I've decided to try and put together my first ever vintage hockey set - 1974-75 Topps.

I've started watching ebay to pick up some, but I'm pretty particular about condition (not a fan of creases). I'm already beginning to see some issues, though. My local card shop doesn't have any hockey before 89-90 and there hasn't been a show in town here in the last decade (and most of the guys there won't have hockey singles anyhow).

What are the odds of being able to put together a set like this trading? Are there other places to pick up older lots and singles? How do you more seasoned vintage collectors do it?

Thanks in advance for your help,

-FB...

Well, this forum is a great place to start...you never know what will pop up. For instance, I am doing the 67/68 Topps set and found someone on here who had about 35-40 cards in very good condition (probably ~PSA 5+ grade) that I was able to buy outright for about 50%bv

ask around...I am sure people will be very helpful. Also, ask fellow members to keep an eye out when they go to card shows. I have sent people money to purchase stuff in shows in canada as I live in the states. This website is a terriffic way to obtain cards that would otherwise be impossible to get

hope that helps, and keep us updated on your set (dont forget pictures :) )

In the same boat, need about 30 cards to finish the '68 Topps set, not really looking to pay $4 a card on ebay shipping...Good luck!

send me a list. We don't have tons of Topp's (We're in OPC country) but I do have a few thousand lying around of various years.

Please note - they are 1/2 BV.

Don't ask us to dig up 30 cards and then want them for 10%. People do that all the time Then when they can't find them anywhere else and end up coming back and paying 80-100%.

Since you asked. I am still a member of that other site (lambasted here on a regular basis) and their new system is ideal for completing vintage sets. I have added probably 300 cards to my vintage OPC sets in the last year with very little effort.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll let everyone know how I'm doing periodically. Hopefully, I'll get a good ways.

Thanks for the offer, I guess. I'm just starting the set, though, so I need pretty much all of them. I'm not really interested in your offer, either (1/2 book not knowing what you have or the condition seems like a lot). I can appreciate where you are coming from not wanting to be troubled, but I didn't ask you for anything. I don't even really know you, so I found it a little offensive for you to make assumptions about me or what I'd ask for. Thanks anyways.

I am a set collector. I have been trying for the past 5 years to put the 1977-78 OPC, 1978-79 OPC and 1979-80 OPC sets together. From 1980-81 OPC and up I am good. I have done most of my purchasing on Ebay. I have been able to luck out and get some very good lots. By very good, I mean that I have been able to get near mint and higher grades. I have also, purchased packs from 1977-78 OPC and 1978-79 OPC. Yes, I have had the last card stick to the gum, but most of the time it was a common. I am very particular in my sets with the major point being I want 4 sharp corners. I can live with OC and rough cuts (I will likely improve my sets at some point). I have also had a few bad purchases. Though, it PO's me, I still push ahead. I have bought larger lots (1980's) just to upgrade my sets. I did this recently and am now trading what I do not need off to others who are looking to complete sets, for certain players or certain teams. In the end, depending on how much time and effort and grades you want, you can get the cards you need quickly or it will take time. The 1974-75 set - from the OPC point of view is a nice set as is the Topps version. I am not sure why you picked this set to start with, but we all have our reasons. I would suggest looking at sets that were bulk produced. For the OPC sets - 1977-78, 1982-83 and 1984-85 are easy ones to get alot of cards on, as they were purduced in large quantities.

I wish you all the best in your efforts and don't get discouraged if you do get cards that are not to your standards. All of us tend to grade cards differently and hence this is why we are not working for PSA or Beckett.
