Crazy eh? Edmonton to Calgary both with 4 years left! After watching Lucic and Neal play last year there may not be a winner, they were brutal. Calgary gets tougher and Neal only had 1 bad year so we’ll see! Who do you think won?

Both won. Maybe a slight edge to Calgary because they got Edm to retain 750k of Lucic's salary. Both guys needed a change of scenery. Although Neal has a greater chance of a bounce back to 2nd line status.

The big loser are the Canucks, who are still sitting with Eriksson's bad contract ($6M AAV), and doesn't see eye to eye with the coach. Could have swapped with either Neal of Lucic, but couldn't make it happen, even with Eriksson's lower salary.

Edmonton wins and it isn't really close either. Neal won't be as bad as he was last year. Even if he scores "just" 20 goals, that's still a big win.

Edmonton won this deal hands down. That contract was considered un-tradable and it shows we made the right choice bringing Holland in to fix this team. I still can’t believe he was able to pull this trade off.

Lucic has never lived up to his contract and is just a real lazy player. Consummate pro yes, but lazy and slow as heck ... a.k.a boat anchor. And refusing to fight and mix it up with your buddies when they played LA, that was when I knew he had to go.

Neal will now be playing on the top lines and getting the ice time he wants....and if Connor can turn around players like Chiasson and Kassian, then Neal should have no problem scoring 20 goals this coming season.

I give the edge to the Oilers but as much as I don’t like the Oilers I honestly hope it ends up as a win-win deal.

Not sure how I feel about adding Lucic Flames cards to the PC now though...

Yea I thinking just getting rid of Lucic for anything is a hell of a deal. Like you said his contract is horrible, he hasn't been good since he left Boston, and getting Neal in return is decent. He could pair up nicely with McDavid we'll see

"I just don't get it": Calgary sports talk radio upset over Lucic trade

The take

1. There are no shortage of reports about how fed up Calgary Flames fans were with James Neal last year. They seem about as happy with Neal’s play as Edmonton fans were with Patrick O’Sullivan in his final year here.

2. Part of the upset in Calgary, I do believe, is that fans in other NHL cities are so used to the Oilers making bad trades, and so used to ridiculing those moves and the players like Lucic that the Oilers have acquired, that it stings all the more when a new Oilers GM comes in, moves out one of those ridiculed players and possible gets the best of the hometown GM (Treliving in this case) in a deal. It’s hard for Calgary fans to process this dynamic, this moment. Let’s hope it’s not the last time that new Oilers GM Ken Holland can create this kind of cognitive dissonance in a rival team’s fanbase.

3. The part I loved most about this discussion was the speculation on Lucic’s No Movement Clause and the Seattle expansion draft. As an Oilers fan, what a relief it is not to have to worry about that NMC and the expansion draft anymore. Thank goodness it’s Calgary’s problem and not the Oil’s problem. Indeed, one of the major benefits of moving out Lucic beyond anything he did on the ice was getting out from under this NMC as well as his essentially buy-out proof contract.

Edmonton actually got the better of somebody in a trade? what the.....

If Neal tanks this season, Edmonton can buy him out for less than half of what it would have cost to buy out Lucic. Tip of the hat to Ken Holland!

You don’t buy out the Rocket Richard leader!!!
