Disgruntled Leafs Fan,

William Nylander’s last-second settlement has come at the expense of Josh Leivo.
As an alternative to attempting to pass a depth piece through waivers, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Leivo to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday to make room on the active roster for the returning Swede.
In return, Toronto acquires undrafted winger Michael Carcone, who has six goals and 11 assists in 20 games with the Utica Comets this season. He’ll report to the Toronto Marlies.
Leivo signed a one-year extension worth just short of $1 million with the Maple Leafs in November of last season despite primarily serving as a healthy scratch. Leivo stepped into a full-time role during Nylander’s contract impasse, and chipped in with four goals and six points from a depth position.
Leivo was reasonably effective in an elevated role, but didn’t see a considerable uptick in production with quality linemates and some power-play run over the last two months. Not enough for the Leafs to prioritize him over Justin Holl, Martin Maricin or Frederik Gauthier, anyway.
All told, Leivo had 14 goals and 14 assists in 84 games with the Maple Leafs across six seasons.
He’ll have another chance to cement his place as a top-nine regular in Vancouver.
