Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the month of March 2021. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 16 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. Also stay tuned for the top ten cards of the month at the end, so without further adieu, lets get to it!
2005-06 Victory Oversized Saku Koivu #BU20
Oversized cards are not everyone's preference, but I think these victory cards are pretty cool, especially if you are going for the rainbow. To my knowledge, these were only distributed in the victory tins and were not included in the hobby or blaster boxes. Its been a while since I've seen an unopened tin for sale so if you've got one please let me know!
2005-06 UD Victory Gold Brian Leetch #187 (80-100)
This was a very recent addition from Leetch's brief stay on the Maple Leaf's blueline. It would have been interesting to see how the 2004-05 season would have played out for the blue and white with the wealth of experience in the additions of Francis and Leetch, which suited the style of play for the time. With the changes to the game starting in the 2005-06 season, it really set the franchise back for over a decade, that combined with the Rask-Pogge swap and a few other questionable moves really tested my support for the team haha. Oh well, it eventually led to the Matthews/Marner era so I suppose it worked out for the better in the end!
2005-06 ITG 6th Memorabilia Blades of Steel Elmer Lach (21/25)
I am always fascinated by the quality of vintage memorabilia found in the early ITG sets, this being no exception. Quite frankly, I wouldn't even know where to begin looking a game used Lach skate aside from the Hockey Hall of Fame these days. Very happy to add it to my growing ITG collection!
2005-06 Wade Redden Collection
This past month I had the incredible opportunity to acquire an extensive Wade Redden collection from a fellow forum member. We reached a deal on the 2005-06 portion of the collection, naturally, and the following are the cards which fell just short of my top ten countdown.
The highlights include (in no particular order):
SPx Winning Combos Spectrum Chara/Redden 1/10
BAP SP Signatures Gold 10/10
BAP Dual Signatures Hossa/Redden
The Cup Emblems of Endorsements 13/15
The Cup Signature Patch 14/75
Parkhurst True Colors Hasek/Heatley/Spezza/Alfredsson/Havlat/Redden/Chara/Meszaros
UD Masterpiece Printing Plates Black 1/1
Victory Silver 137/250
MVP Gold and Platinum Parallels 28/100 and 2/25
Now to the top 10!
#10. 2005-06 SP Game Used Triple Patch Chara/Redden/Hasek (9/10)
How stacked were the Senators this year? While the Hurricanes proved to be the Stanley Cup Champions in the end, it could have just as easily been the Sabres or Senators had the injuries and puck luck been adjusted slightly. What an absolute powerhouse of a rear guard the Sens iced with these three on defense!
#9. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate 6th Memorabilia Gloves are Off Silver Maurice Richard (8/25)
Did I mention that I am amazed at the quality of vintage memorabilia released in ITG sets? This card features a piece of Richard's game used gloves, used to score his more than 500 goals in his career. What I really like about this piece is the seam that divides it into a two color piece.
#8. 2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects White Alexander Steen #270 (5/5)
Another incredible addition to my growing Steen rookie year cards, this card features a great 3-colour patch and nicely centered signature. With only five copies to go around, its a prized addition to any Steen/ Leafs/ or set collector!
#7. 2005-06 Be A Player SP Signatures Quad Hossa/Redden/Bondra/Hasek #OTWA
A tough pull from the first set released during the 2005-06 season, it features an incredible variety of signatures of some high profile players. I believe Hossa's signature is among the most unique I have seen, I'm not sure if he has divulged the thinking behind it but I would love to hear it!
#6. 2005-06 The Cup Scripted Numbers Brodeur/Cheevers (2/30)
When I saw this card listed featuring a mutlicolored swatch on the Brodeur, I just couldn't pass it up. Two hall of fame goaltenders, mutlicolored swatches, dual autographs and donning their iconic masks, what more could a goalie fan ask for!
#5. 2005-06 Upper Deck High Gloss Redden, Sakic and Steen /10
The month of March was quite productive in my goal to complete this set, with three new additions. The Redden came from the aforementioned collection, and it is the first copy that I have seen. The Sakic is truly a special addition for me because he was my initial introduction to hockey and my childhood idol. Not only is it the first copy I have ever seen, it is also in exceptional condition in BGS 9. The highest graded copy. The Steen is also quite special, as the Young Gun HG cards that I am missing is beginning to dwindle, especially for series 1. A PSA grade of Mint 9 also helps preserve this rookie year card of the 2019 Cup Champion.
These three additions give me a total of 228/487 or 46.8, roughly 47% completion.
#4. 2005-06 UD Black Diamond Ilya Kovalchuk Onyx #169 (1/1)
As a lover of parallels, the Black Diamond Onyx cards are a milestone moment whenever they are acquired. Many are buried in Player PC's, never to see the light of day, especially those of star caliber players such as Kovalchuk. This card gives me 12 onyx cards out of the 210 set, or roughly 6% of the print run.
And now the top 3......
#3. 2005-06 ITG Crosby Series Emerald Base #2, #12 and #24 BGS 9.5 (1/1)
I was lucky enough to grab a trio of Crosby rookie year 1/1 emerald parallel base cards from ITG's release documenting Sidney Crosby's career milestones to that point. Being from Nova Scotia, its pretty special to have a Crosby card from his days on the Dartmouth Subways! For those wondering how he faired during his 2001-02 season on the team, he recorded a staggering 106 goals and 217 points... in 81 games. Just craziness, really happy to add these cards to my collection.
#2. 2005-06 UD Powerplay Specialty Patches Dominik Hasek #SP-DO (5/5)
I cannot understate how incredibly excited I was to complete the deal for this card. For any hardcore Hasek collectors out there, or any Player collector out there, you can appreciate how rare of a find these patches are. The powerplay release wasn't a high end product and were widely available, directed at the casual or young collector. This indicates a high print run with the low numbered chase cards few and far in between, similar to the victory release with black parallels.
What makes this card extra special is that the 3-coloured "goat head" patch comes from the 1998 All-Star jersey he wore, meaning it can be photo matched to an extent.
#1. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate 6th Memorabilia Builders Cut Autograph James D. Norris (1/1)
This is the first cut autograph in my collection and a true one-of-one item. The son of James E. Norris, whom the Norris Trophy is named after, was part owner of the Blackhawks during their cup win in 1961. Prior to that, he served as president to the Red Wings organization through 1952. He accumulated an astonishing 6 Stanley Cups in the two organizations. Also of note, he served as a lieutenant in the US Navy through World War 2, which adds to the card for me as a history enthusiast. He sadly passed away in 1966, so his signature would be quite a challenge to find as he has been gone for over 50 years. This is truly a unique piece of hockey history, a true one-of-one in my opinion!
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what April will bring, comments/feedback are welcome. Have a great Easter weekend everyone!
