Marian Hossa Possibly Having to Retire

Sounds like the treatment is pretty serious stuff. Definitely not the way you want to see a HOF player end his career. I hope he gets well soon and comes back to finish his career on the ice!

So he developed this allergy since last season? or has he been playing with it for years?

I'm no doctor, but it really sounds more like a case of I-was-never-going-to-play-the-last-four-years-of-this-deal-itis.

He's been dealing with it for a few years and the doctors finally said they have legitimate concerns about his long term health.

I suspected "Salarycapitis" myself but Hossa seems like a guy who would play through virtually anything and genuinely loves playing the game. Hoping he can recover and come back for a final game but my guess is this is probably it for him. He looked good in stretches last year.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt here because he seems like a genuinely good NHL-er but there's no doubt it's going to look that way to other GM's if the Hawks happen to get cap relief when Hossa was entering the last four years of his front-loaded deal that only pays him $1mil from here on out.

I suspected "Salarycapitis" ...

I was checking WebMD and the only treatment is being dealt to Arizona.

More seriously, skin allergies are really strange in how they can manifest later in life. I've got some weirdness in matters of latex, for example. I don't doubt Hossa's situation for a moment. Thankfully, from his perspective, he's already received the vast majority of his current contract, will end up in the Hall of Fame, and won the Cups in Chicago that he couldn't snag in Ottawa, Pittsburgh, and Detroit (Atlanta doesn't count).

Let this be a lesson...WASH YOUR GEAR!!

20 yr NHL career plus at least 10 years of competative hockey before that, at minimum. That's a lot of funk on your skin!

agree 100% with the "Salarycapitis"! first thing that came to mind. which i believe is also why the league is reviewing this case to see if he is eligible for LTIR.

People can question it all they want but the man has a legit illness, he's not one to pack his bags and go home like Datsyuk. Kinda funny that Wings fans have issues with it, short memories from their team playing the trade the cap game with Arizona I guess.....

Sad to see.

For those questioning the illness - go back and read the article!

"The sources who confirmed the allergy stressed not to make fun of it, with one saying, “It’s only funny to anyone who’s never had it.” Details are sketchy, because no one would give full information, but the medication necessary to combat the allergy is potent enough that doctors wanted his blood tested every few weeks to make sure there were no major side effects.

That’s very serious stuff, and word is doctors worried about Hossa taking the medicine for extended periods of time"

He has been dealing with this for a long time - it is the medication that worries the Dr's.
It is not meant to be used for long term management, it is supposed to be for attacks and flare-ups.

Hossa is a sure fire HOF'er - can't see anyone disputing that fact.

Allergies aren't something anyone should mess with, whether or not you believe it or not. You do realize that the team still has to be cap compliant before the season starts. The Blackhawks can't apply for LTIR until Day 2. So unless they can trade for a $5M player at that point, it's not like the cap relief can replace Hossa and have them in their camp waiting in the wings.

I think the reason it has to be investigated is that if this is a long term thing (which there seems to be no question of), when Hossa signed the long term deal, was the fact this would happen investigated and considered in the offering of the deal? It's not about determining if he's truly suffering or not - it's about what were the expectations and intentions at the signing of the deal, and could both parties have reasonably expected Hossa to be healthy enough to make it to the end of the contract.

If it's found that medically, there was no way he would have made it that long, and one or both parties should have been reasonably aware of that, he may not be eligible for LTIR relief.
