So Martin Brodeur has 14 games before the end of the Fall Expo. In theory he could break the record before the end of the Fall Expo. What impact do you think this will have on his current Brodeur cards and future ones? Obviously he will have a card made for the number of wins he has, but prices wise?

Will they instantly shoot up after he breaks the record? Gradual? Or have people already priced it in?

brodeur's cards are already up there in value. i doubt they have too much more to keep going. as it is, it's already debatable on who's better between roy and brodeur. couple that in with the fact that UD likes to put the 2 on cards together anyway and i'd say values may already be factored in.

the price on some of his cards may go up a bit. I dont see it jumping a drastic amount though. For newer cards that is. Older cards, I dont see moving much at all. People now a days are to focus on the big name rookies to even give a rats behind about any other players.
You may see some brodeur collectors going a bit more crazy though.

I didnt notice much of a jump when Roy set the record.

Unfortunately, most players' cards aren't valued by their production in their respective sport anymore, the value is artificially "created" by the card producers in pack price, print run, and hype.

Older cards will be affected, but singular record book accomplishments won't result in much. I would say you won't see any significant change in vintage Brodeur until his HoF induction, or unless someone confirms that 98% of his RC print run goes up in a house fire.

Brodeur is the man, and *almost* everyone wants one of his autos in their collection, but I doubt prices will go much higher than they are... too much stuff out there these days!

The thing is, Brodeur can break the wins record and the shutout record. Both of which many people think it will take a LONG time to beat again. If ever considering how people thought the shutout record was impossible. But again, the whole production, cost of packs, and hype will probably reduce any chance of the price being significantly affected by one of the most impressive records being broken. And I guess collectors don't really remember the year these records fall either right? Or else people would want cards from year 19XX or 20XX when so and so did this.

Thought I would point this out in this thread...

Last night I purchased a 07/8 Brodeur Cup Chirography Auto, serial #'d 30/50 for $49.

I consider that to be a VERY fair price for a hard signed auto from the Cup, it is the second cheapest Brodeur Auto I have ever purchased, I believe... and all on a night when he picks up win #541 and career shutout #97.

But he hasn't beaten the record yet... Like Michael Phelps saw his prices go up after each gold medal as he got closer to beating the record. I don't expect Brodeur to have his auto go from 30 dollars to 500 after he breaks the record, but I think some collectors may not be thinking about the record, and when he does break it, they will jump on the bandwagon and thus inflate the prices.

As a Brodeur collector I have already seen an increase in both the number of people jumping on the band wagon and purchasing his cards as well as the increase in price of some of his cards.
One good thing I have benifited from is the increase in sellers trying to make their gold mine by unloading his cards. In recent months I have picked up several older hard to find cards from sellers dusting their old stuff off and putting it up for auction.
Yes there are still great deals to be had on Martin's cards, but there is also some unrealistic prices being paid by band wagon jumpers for other cards of his.
It has become a very interesting time to be searching, watching and buying Brodeur cards on the bay.I don't search for anything else. I have at times shook my head at some of over priced cards that have sold as well as said "damn, I missed another one that went for a great price."

Brodeur rocks!!!

I have trimmed my collection down to essentially autos, patch autos and the occasional sweet patch... I have noticed a decline in prices due to over saturation, but the demand for Marty stuff has never been higher...

#542 and counting...

so just wondering... Will his record be tarnished if he sets the record by winning a shootout?

Its just one of those things... in the past goalies could not win games in a shootout.. I don't know how many games over the last 2+ seasons that he has won via Shootout...

If you don't count shootout wins, he will more than likely pass Roy anyways. So people may feel like it is tarnished now, but wait another year or two.

Brodeur has won 27 games via the shootout, the most of any goalie. If you subtract the 27 from his current 542, he is sitting at 515 "real" wins.

What we as fans and collectors need to do is evaluate the stigma that has been attached to shootout wins. I for one think it is pretty cool when a goalie stones the other team's 3 best players in a battle of wills... Why would a goalie not receive credit for a shootout win when more often than not, the goalie is entirely responsible for that W? For a perfect example, check out the game last Saturday where Brodeur stopped Nylander, Semin and Ovechkin in a row and won the shootout 1-0... you're telling me that isn't a legit win?

At one point there wasn't even an overtime. Should those wins count? A win is a win. If anything, I think Brodeur can get enough "Real" wins in his career so it should not be an issue.

Does this one tonight count? No? How about the shutout? (not to be confused with the aforementioned shootout)... hahaha!

YEAH BABY! Go Marty, Go Devils, lights out Avery you goof.

Well then shouldn't a loss be a loss? but they added that OTL column....

Now I'm more worried about the falling Canadian Dollar adding costs to the Brodeur collection.
 Man that sucks!

Yeah it sure is rough... made a nice purchase last night that figures to be my last on the Bay for awhile... adding 50% to every purchase isn't going to be cool. The first ridiculous "oh but the exchange rate" comments were swirling at the toronto show yesterday... even on cards that have been on tables for years... this should be interesting.

Yes, after having to pay $97 something on a $69 purchase, I have decided to but ebay on hold for a while as well. Not gonna go there now that the dollar is back to 75 cents.
:| Wish I had the money to prop up some banks and be trillions in debt and still be worth something. :|

Good News Though!

Devils VS Leafs Tonight! Go Marty Go!

Hopefully he plays... looks like Devils nation is screaming and crying for Weekes to start against Joseph... I really don't see why. Either way, I hope the team shows a lot better tonight than it did against the Fluers n the weekend, and a lack of smoke bombs thrown on the ice would be great too... how that wasn't a fan interference penalty I will never know.

Now is a pretty good time to sell though... sell for "real" dollars and you get 25% more play money in return!
