Hi all,

Has anyone completed a master set (not including early Topps/OPC, 90s sets).

Something with autos, base, etc. Please share how long it took and what the set was. Any stories also :)

I'm not too far from the 2002-03 Parlkhurst Retro master set.

But I did not go after any show-stamped or "Vault" (couple exceptions re: Vault).

So once I get a few more Lemieux auto's and mini parallel rookies, I should be "done".

Show stamped and Vault don’t count. Pack pulled cards only :)

No. I've managed to complete some sets with everything but the parallels, but the proliferation of parallels has killed any attempt at it ever again.

I plan to complete 2012-13 Classics Signatures. About 59 cards away. It’s quite the beast and I’m dreading buying the last 10 cards. I’m expecting it to take 5-10 more years but added 6 this past week so thats a nice chunk.

I have completed 4 Master Sets so far, and I am a couple cards short of one more. I am still working on 00-01 Topps Heritage. My definition of a Master Set is a copy of every card produced for the product.

In most cases I continue the OCD of the Master Set and chase sealed packs, boxes, and sell sheets.

Here are my Maser Sets, along with time taken and maximum sets
2000-01 Topps Stars (12 years, /25) See here
2001-02 Topps Heritage (13 years, /25) See here
2002-03 Topps Heritage (10 years, /10?) See here
2003-04 Parkhurst Original 6 - Toronto Maple Leafs (2 years, /20) See here

I'm 83 cards away from a 2000-01 Pacific Aurora master set.

Base set (150 cards)
Premiere Date parallel
Pinstripe parallel to base set (only 50 of 150 base cards have this)
Premiere Date parallel of the pinstripes
Autographs (only 11 on the checklist, and I'm skeptical of the Brodeur existing)
Canvas (10 cards and the last one should be incoming!)
Championship Fever with 3 parallels (20 cards each, with the base CF having an additional LeClair auto card)
Jerseys (10 cards with a Patch parallel that I'm guessing will never be completed, but I have 3 of the 10)
Dual Jerseys (4 cards)
Scouting Reports (20 cards)
Styrotechs (20 cards)

In addition to some of the parallels being hard to find, another prohibitive factor is the "book value" BIN listings compared to the auctions that go for a fraction of the price. Sometimes it's either overpay significantly or wait years and years to see if it appears for auction. The worst was paying $40 for an Yzerman and then seeing one go unbid at auction for $0.99 a few weeks later.

I also started working on Upper Deck sets a few years back starting at the beginning. The first few years are easy, but I've got a handful of cards remaining from 1993-94 and working on 1994-95 this year.

I've tackled two...

ITG Lord Stanley's Mug

It took me just under 5 years to complete the "near" master set, that is everything excluding 1/1's. There are a whopping 460 1/1's in the product, I'm closing in on 50% but will of course never have them all.

Leaving 1/1's aside, it was a monumental enough task. Beyond the base set and the one-a-pack history inserts, managed to pick up all 534 memorabilia cards (359 of which are limited to either 9 or 10 copies)... 285 autos (no specific print run info, but based on boxes produced about 35 copies apiece)... 33 Henri Richard tribute cards (some auto, some auto/memo - all x/10)... and I even put together two complete sets of redemption stamped history cards (one set I exchanged for a replica Cup autographed by Bobby Clarke, the other set I only completed recently - based on watching many case breaks it appears roughly 5 extra copies of each of the 45 cards were produced, beyond the 11 sets worth that were all redeemed). And as a bonus I also put together the 120 card silver Decades memorabilia set (all x/9) that was an expo exclusive (one Decades card per box of Mug), and have a couple dozen gold Decades 1/1's as well.

2014-15 Masterpieces

I'm over 99.6% of the way there. The 600 base / parallels were relatively easy to acquire... completed all 450 memorabilia cards (ranging from unnumbered but probably around 100 copies down to some x/15's)... have 307 out of 312 autos (about a hundred of which are either SSP, x/15, x/5, or 1/1)... and all but one of the 20 hand painted portrait cards (all x/10).

There was one memorabilia card that UD had on the checklist that I'm pretty sure never got made (Sawchuk stick x/35), and UD has also replaced most of the redemptions that have not been fulfilled at this point, I'm not 100% sure on what ultimately was produced or not, but pretty confident that my want list is down to 6 cards - 4 of them I've seen and just missed out on. Two cards I've never seen...

One is a Lemieux B&W portrait red auto x/5 - all Lemieuxs were redemptions, but everything else from him was fulfilled and UD tells me this one was fulfilled as well, I've yet to see either a redemption card or live copy though, and not all the info I've received from UD was reliable (they did say they were still waiting for one of other Lemieux cards that I actually do have a live copy of, so it might be they mixed things up and the one I'm looking for doesn't even exist).

And the other card I haven't seen yet is the Yzerman B&W portrait Black 1/1... I've managed to pick up 4 out of the 5 cards in the product that are 1/1 (Gretzky, Orr, Messier, and Datsyuk autos), so needless to say I'm dying to find the Yzerman.

I've never had the courage to attempt a master set haha.

I think it would be fun, especially if you know it's going to take many years to complete. As I get more experienced the "gotta have them right now" attitude has lessened. I want to have as many as possible, don't get me wrong, but I appreciate the slow burn in some areas of my collection more than I once did.

Maybe one day I'll make it official and start a master set of... something.

I've seen some of your master set projects that other collectors have mentioned in this thread. They are all epic in there own way. Keep up the hunt!

I tried the Edmonton Oilers Collection from 13-14... but then after reverse engineering the odds - I gave up on a true master set...

For one thing - getting one of each of the Autographed Emblems of all twenty four players live - which will likely never happen, since I do not believe Jordan Eberle ever returned his. I cashed it in after waiting nearly six years almost two years removed after being traded.

The multiple autos based on the tiers was a fools errand - I calculated the Group A autos to have a print run of 5. Even for the single autos - the Group A autos of Messier and Coffey have a print run of 15.

Then there are the autographed versions of the Championship Banners or Retired Numbers...Each of the Gretzkys were out of 5 - I pulled two of the four banners, and two of the 24 autographed emblems. But given the 70 odd variations of banners and about 80% of them signed to varying print runs of between 5 and 25, not happening...

Even the regular Championship Banners I am still missing one for all of the variations - Andy Moog 84-85/10 - and since the wax is pretty much non-existent now I expect that to be at an end.

For Emblems - there were 24 players and each had 24 pieces to make up a complete emblem - so you can go many ways - all of one player or one of each to make a complete emblem.

So with all the permutations - and all the money I had committed to ripping 30 plus cases and nowhere near a true master - I settled on working on the single Franchise Ink autos, the Team Logo Patches (down to 2/100,) one Championship Banner.

I do know that there was a mystery collector who tried to undertake the whole thing - I don't know if his extras are still up on ebay but his prices were out of whack even for my liking.

I had one of those Eberle as a redemption and I was compensated with a Coffey Monumental a while ago...
