Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of May and June. The reason for missing a show and tell thread for May was the severity of the backed up mail in my part of Alberta, and I didn't have much in hand to scan. But I have all of what I purchased from that time frame in hand now so onto the show!
2005-06 Fleer Ultra Ice Medallion Parallels /100
Starting off this thread is a group of 21 ice medallion parallels, each numbered to 100, which I was able to pick up for a great price. While I wasn't actively collecting the set, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to add these to my collection. The most notable cards featured would be stars such as Thornton, Pronger, Zetterberg, Forsberg and radio personality Jeff O'Neill.
2005-06 MVP Gold Parallel Wolski #396 (89/100)
This card was acquired as part of a larger deal, though special none the less. Collecting cards 15 years old really truly see how rare it is for any player to make it 10 plus years in the league, even if you had great potential or were highly touted. Wolski, a former first round pick, had such promise and had a decent career for himself. As it turns out, he continues to play in the Czech league with Trinec Ocelari HC.
2005-06 Victory Gold Parallels Kiprusoff and Sundin /100
Two more Victory additions that were wallet friendly were the Kiprusoff and Sundin additions. Always happy to add these when I can.
2005-06 Victory Silver Parallels Briere, Bernard, Sakic, Arnott and Stevens /250
Even though technically more numerous than their golden cousins, they can be much tougher to find. The reason for this could be because at first glance one can mistake these for base cards. However upon a second look, the silver border and distinct serial number on the reverse makes the distinction clear.
2005-06 UD Shooting Stars Jersey Shanahan Jersey S-BS (2-colour)
Its always a treat to add cards from this set, and this 2-colour Shanahan is no different. Exhibiting a yellow pin stripe from his days with the blues is not a jersey piece often seen.
2005-06 SPx Winning Materials Drury WM-CD (27/350) 4-colour jersey
Chris Drury, a somewhat forgotten electrifying player today who carved himself a memorable career, doesn't seem to get much hobby love these days but I was ecstatic to add this to my collection. The dual swatch window with a total of 4 different colours from his days with the Avalanche, all while being featured in the last season of the "Goat Head" uniform. I may be in the minority of hockey fans but I'd love to see an alternate of this in the current NHL.. And while you are at it bring back the Washington "Eagle" jersey as an alternate too!
2005-06 Artifacts Silver Auto-Facts Morrison AF-MO (30/50)
The first 05-06 Auto-Facts auto in my collection, I managed to pick this up in a small lot of cards. Sharp design for the Artifacts series.
2005-06 MVP Platinum Torres (14/25), Coburn RC (10/25), Bochenski RC (19/25) and Perry RC (3/25)
I had some great success with this set recently, with the biggest card of the lot being the Perry RC. Sharp design with a unique serial numbered font which was prevalent in the early editions of the MVP sets.
2005-06 UD Powerplay Impact Parallel Fleury #70 (6/29)
I have a fascination with this set, and adding to it is always a special find, particularly the low numbered ones. With each card being numbered to the players jersey number, this Fleury is limited to just 29 copies and I happened to get mine at a great price.
2005-06 Ultimate Rookies Patch Autograph Coburn #102 (16/25) 3-colour patch
The first of many high end Coburn cards to follow, I was lucky enough to buy a Coburn collection from a forum member who decided it was time to move the PC. I am incredibly grateful to have been given the first crack at it and now this ultimate rookie rests in my collection!
2005-06 Coburn Printing Plates The Cup Auto Yellow (1/1), Ultimate Auto Magenta (1/1), UD Masterpieces Cyan (1/1)
I have stated in the past that even though I don't actively seek out printing plates (there are just so many!), I can't help but pick them up when it makes sense. These three came in the Coburn collection I mentioned earlier, and I am very happy to display them along with the rest of the PC.
2005-06 Powerplay Specialty Patches Weight SP-DW (5-5) 2-colour patch
A patch from a set which is very seldom seen, this is the first of its kind in my collection, and not for lack of trying! I still remember missing out on a Brett Hull patch a few years ago and I hadn't come across any others in that time span. I'm very happy to add this one to the fold!
2005-06 SP Game Used Autographed Parallel Coburn #109 (1/5)
A tough parallel to track down given the very limited serial number, it is another gem from the PC I purchased. Great eye appeal with an autograph which does not bleed, fade or get cut off at the sticker's edge, issues prevalent in this release.
2005-06 SP Game Used Rookie Exclusives Parallel RE-BC (3/5)
Another limited parallel from the SP Game Used product, I always liked the design featured here. It would be cool to see a modern tribute to this set with either swatch or patch pieces in the circular windows in the upper half of the card.
2005-06 SPxcitment Rookies Autographed Parallel Coburn XR-BC (5/5)
This card, limited to 5 copies, comes from the SPx release and is quite flashy in hand. Upper Deck did a great job with the design and use of eye popping foil. Again, it would be an interesting idea for a modern tribute to this set.
2005-06 UD McDonald's NHL Goalie Gear Luongo Pad MG3 (34/50)
An incredibly rare card from a tough set, this is my third card from this series that I've managed to acquire. What is pretty unique about this card is that the pad piece actually comes from a set he wore while with the Islanders, a team which many people forget he even played for! Here's to hoping I manage to find more cards from this awesome set!
2005-06 Fleer Ultra Rookie Uniformity Patch Autograph Coburn ARP-BC (1/5) 3-colour Patch
This set is among my favorites that I collect. Really nice design with a great use of foils and silvery darker tones makes the patch really come to life! The 3-colour piece and autograph are icing on the cake.
Now onto my top 5!...
#5. 2005-06 UD Victory Unopened Box (Y1560437)
While not necessarily a high end product, it is a tough find these days which will cost you a pretty penny when you do. In the span of three months I've managed to add two to my collection. Maybe one of these days I'll bust one or both open in my search for the ever elusive black parallels.
#4. 2005-06 Hot Prospects En Fuego Shield #219 Coburn (1/1)
Its crazy for me to put this beauty of a card so low on the count down but it was just that sort of month for me. This was a card I was after ever since I found it a few years ago, and I'm glad I was offered the chance at purchasing it, along with the rest of the Coburn PC. This shield gives me my tenth shield from this set, and 14th En Fuego overall!
#3. 2005-06 SP Authentic Rarefied Rookies Coburn RR-BC (1/1)
An incredible piece and cornerstone of the Coburn PC which I acquired, I absolutely love this set. Its not often that I come across these, and when I do they are the highlight of a major PC, so any chance I get to add one to the collection typically means that the rest of the PC is coming with it. I'm not sure if this was the only year that this set was featured in the SP Authentic release, but if it was upper deck really hit it out of the park with this set.
#2. 2005-06 UD HG Glossy Lot (17 new additions)
It was an absolutely incredible month(s) of high gloss finds and set progress. Not only did I surpass the 200 HG benchmark, I absolutely smashed through it with 17 new finds! Below I have outlined each card I acquired with a small write up if it holds some added significance. 10 of the 17 finds came from forum member and hobby store owner Gamebreakers, who had them hiding in storage for what seems like years. So I'd like to thank Hans for taking the time and searching through his boxes and helping me with my collection. I couldn't even attempt this sort of set without great people in the hobby such as himself. The 17 new adds give me a new total of 215/487 of the set, or roughly 44% completion! Here's to the new goal of 50% completion in the hopefully near future!
#1 Fedorov (4/10)
An incredible addition that came to my attention by a fellow forum member, I was ecstatic to cross off card number one from the set. Its always the first and last cards of any set which seem to give collectors headaches in the past. So thanks Eric for alerting me to the Fedorov!
#3 Rob Niedermayer (2/10)
#75 Torres (3/10)
#86 Robitaille (4/10)
#104 Dagenais (8/10)
#105 Vokoun (5/10)
As a goalie, cards of goaltenders hold a little more significance to me. The golden glossy finish adds an aesthetically pleasing combination with Nashville's uniforms from the time. This is the only Vokoun of its kind that I have come across to date, the rest must be floating around in Europe as he still has a fairly large following overthere.
#108 Hall (3/10)
#140 Handzus (3/10)
#176 Taylor (2/10)
#249 Carney (2/10)
#255 Shields (9/10)
Man were those Thrashers jerseys sharp! I wanted this card pretty bad when I first came across a copy, but the seller wasn't interested in letting it go. Luckily enough for me, this second copy has offered and I wasn't going to let it go. With Atlanta being a long forgotten stop for Steve Shields, there aren't too many Thrasher's cards of his, let alone one as limited as this. One more interesting note about this card is the mask which he dons in the picture, a tribute to Gerry Cheevers "stitches" face mask.
#263 Stuart (2/10)
Stuart is actually featured twice in the HG set, firstly as a Shark and secondly as a Bruin. He was a key piece in the infamous Joe Thornton trade and I now own both of his his HG cards from this year.
#307 Lehtinen (2-10)
#346 Burns (3/10)
What an odd sight to see Brent Burns clean shaven!
#349 Begin (6/10)
#416 Lecavalier (7/10)
#462 Artyukhin (2/10)
And now number 1!....
I hit the motherload...
#1. 2005 Canadian Fall Expo collection (100 new additions!!!!!)
This monstrous collection is actually a conglomerate of 3 smaller collections which I managed to pick up over two months, with a few singles here and there. For the sake of this thread I will only show the highlights but if you wish to see my set progress to date the link to my flickr album is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/153486645@N06/albums/72157672781677227
The newest crop now brings me to an astounding total of 163/250 or 65% completion! I went from not adding any cards to this set for over 6 months to instantly adding 100 new cards. Thats just the way it goes sometimes when dealing with cards limited to only 10. Here are the highlights of the pickups..
