Mike Bossy, Islanders great, four-time Stanley Cup champion, dies at 65

Mike Bossy, one of hockey’s most prolific goal-scorers and a star for the New York Islanders during their 1980s dynasty, has died after a battle with lung cancer. He was 65.

The Islanders and TVA Sports, the French-language network in Canada where he worked as a hockey analyst, confirmed Bossy died Thursday night. A team spokesman said Bossy was in his native Montreal.

Bossy had revealed his diagnosis in October in a letter to TVA Sports.

“It is with a lot of sadness that I need to step away from your screens, for a necessary pause,” Bossy wrote in French. “I intend to fight with all the determination and fire you’ve seen me show on the ice.”

RIP Mike Bossy. One of the purest goal scorers, if not the top, in NHL history. If not for the back issues from the beating he took to score those goals, Ovie would be chasing Bossy, not Gretzky, for the all time goals, and it would be over 1000 goals.

I've got a few autos and mem cards of his but my tribute is a moment. I happened to spot him at Caesar's Palace gift shop in the first year the NHL had the awards in Vegas. He looked familiar but I couldn't place a name. He caught me looking at him, and I asked if he's a hockey player. He replied, I used to be. I still couldn't place a name but had 2 names bouncing around in my head. I said, Borje Salming? Uh...No. Ooof...you're Mike Bossy. In my defense, we had been drinking from those margherita bongs so, my bad. I asked if I could shake his hand, and he shook my hand and my buddies as well. That was my moment, to shake the hand of the purest goal scorer of all time. I'll never forget that moment, and my buddies still give me a hard time for calling him Borje Salming.

RIP #22. Thanks for the highlights (even though you crushed Canucks fans dreams in 82)

I remember going to see an NHL Showdown filming, and Mike Bossy was there. We were all pretty star-struck but the thing that has stuck with my buddies and I over all these years was Mike's chain smoking.
He would take his breakaway shot, circle back to the bench, and spark up smoke. Being young at the time, we thought that was way cool...times have changed.

RIP #22
