The Minnesota Wild have locked up a big piece of their franchise as they have signed goaltender Niklas Backstrom to a four-year contract extension.

The deal is worth $6 million per season and ends all speculation that the Finnish netminder would be on the move at the NHL's Trade Deadline on Wednesday.

In three seasons with the Wild, Backstrom sports a 84-39-18 record with a 2.19 goals against average and .924 save percentage.

Glad they were able to lock him up.
I was going to hate seeing them lost Gabby and him for nothing.

I thought they were looking to move him and name Harding the starter - hmmm, does this mean they are shopping Harding or do they want to keep them both around? Something doesn't quite add up with this one.

Good signing by the Wild. I think Gaborik will definitely be moved now, but potentially to a non-playoff contender this year.

I wonder if this makes Harding available. I think the kid has some real potential and there are about a dozen teams in need of a sold netminder....

Most under rated goalie in the league?

Second most anyway.

There is a certain mid 30's goaltender in Boston that still has a cult following of people who think he is still a career AHLer.

Not a bad price for him either. When you seee what some of the best player are making, 6 mil for a top 5 goalie is not bad at all.

I wouldn't mind seeing Harding traded to Ottawa. I think this kid has huge potential. How about Spezza, Auld and Schubert for Gabby and Harding? :D

I do belive harding will now be shopped around. The Kid has a lot of up side but he wont see the light of day for 4 more years. I'm so happy the resigned Backstrom. Way to go wild

Or an above average goalie who benefits from one of the best defensive systems in the game? I really think Backstrom is a good goalie but put him in front of a team that gives up tons of scoring chances, and I don't think his career numbers would be close to where they are now.

Whew!!! Glad that happened....

All we need is a little more cowbell !!!

You don't watch him day in and day out like I do....this guy is GOOD!!!!!!! And the Wild do give up tons of scoring chances. With no offense, they're always being outshot...just about every game!

Good move by the Wild! :)

There are lots of games, especially last year where the Wild were outshot and still won the game, thanks to Backs. I am glad we signed him. I dont know about shopping Harding around, I bet he hopes so, he could start for a few teams.

It was just really nice to keep a good player around, after losing Rolston last year and maybe Gabby this year.

Yea I am certainly glad this deal is over. We need him more then anyone right now. If we didn't have him we problaby wouldn't even be in the race.
