Having been back in the hobby for a bit over 2 years now, I find I have started to regain interest in sets. Up until now, I had really been focussing on my player collection exclusively, and while that is still by far my priority in the hobby, I find myself increasingly drawn to nicely designed sets, and even some vintage ones.

I expect we all think of the 1911 (c55), and early post WWII sets as landmark sets - the type that will never fall out of favour.

I am wondering what modern era sets you think will eventually fall into this category, if any? Personally, I have to think the quality of rookies in 05-06 the cup sets it apart from other recent releases.

As a huge Habs fans, the Upper Deck Canadiens Centennial, and ITG Superlative Bleu Blanc et Rouge also stand out to me, as sets that will hold my interest for a long time, although the UD version will likely be much easier to complete, excluding the cut autos.

So what modern sets do you think will be highly sought after in 30, 40, 50 years or more? Feel free to include sample pics.

Honestly the only 2 I can see truely being sought after 50 years from now are the SPA FW Auto RC's and Young Guns.

The 05/06 Rookie Class matches (well should over time) the 90 rookie class.

Crosby and Ovechkin may put up Jagr numbers.

I still think anything prior to 88 rules.

2005/06 The Cup opened up a whole new aspect to the hobby, combining the first ultra-high-end product for hockey with the best rookie class in ages (if not ever). I'm not a fan of most of the designs, I find the subsequent releases better looking, but the product still took the hobby by storm.

It's 5 years later and I still love Franchises. A very unique set that was only released once (although in 3 portions) where you have everything from semi-obscure former fan favourites in the auto checklist all the way to Vezina memorabilia.

I could see this set standing out many years down the road. Maybe that's just me though.

05-06 UD Ultimate or The Cup. Both sets are just awesome. The Ultimate set has more Rookie Cards than the Cup (like Mike Green and Mark Streit). I like both sets...

I would say some of the 80's OPC/Topps sets. Bourque RC, Messier RC, Lemieux RC, Roy RC, Yzerman RC even Hull RC. And, of course, there is 79-80 with the Gretzky RC. I just recently finished the 80's (79-80 still too expensive) and sets in nice condition will hold their value.

If Franchises is considered a modern era set, then yes, I wholeheartedly agree. You can also put Legends Masterpieces in this bucket...I believe people will appreciate that set a bit more after its stood the test of time and people see just what kind of firepower the set possessed upon release (it probably would have done a little better out there to be honest if there were cut autos in the product.)

Overall though...I think the modern era set that people will look back on is 05-06 SPA. From the clean layout, to the rookie class, to the fact that everything and everybody had a hard signed autograph to the controversy of Wave 2 and the fact that it broke like crap for the most part till 06-07 seeded all the 05-06 leftovers...it just has too much inside and outside the hobby for people not to remember it.
