Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of September-November 2021. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 16 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. Also stay tuned for the top 10 cards of the fall at the end, so without further adieu, lets get to it!
2005-06 The Cup Base set (1-100; missing #43)
Staring off strong here with the 99% complete inaugural 2005-06 The Cup Bases set! The only card left to complete it is #43 Zetterberg so please reach out to me if you have one available!
Complete sets from this cup run are becoming increasingly rare and more expensive by the year it seems, so I was quite happy to add it to the growing 05-06 collection. Key cards are the Gretzky, Howe and Lemieux cards pictured below, however if you wish to see the rest of the cards included just click the Flickr album link here
[
2005-06 NHL Generations Bourque/Bouwmeester and Sakic/Tanguay/Hejduk
Worthwhile additions to add multi-colored swatches from the NHL dual and triple generations sets, particularly the Colorado trio, I have yet to see another like it!
2005-06 MVP Materials Johnsson
Speaking of dual colored pieces, this addition was pretty easy on the wallet but no less special than more expensive cards on this countdown.
2005-06 Ultimate Richie Reghr RC Gold Parallel (10/25)
Next up is a nice parallel rookie of the lesser known Reghr brother. The gold highlights match the Flames colours nicely on these Ultimate parallel cards.
2005-06 MVP Platinum Ward RC (8/25)
Moving onto another parallel /25, this Ward rookie from the MVP Platinum series is a great piece for me, since he is partly responsible for my initial enthusiasm for collecting this particular year. Regardless of how the rest of his career panned out, no one will be able to take away his Stanley Cup and Conn Smyth Trophy he earned in his rookie year.
2005-06 UD Parkhurst True Colors Carolina Hurricanes
Next we transition to a card which depicts the main Hurricane players who helped Ward win his Cup in 2006. The main reason for adding this card to my collection is not Ward but in fact his backup; Martin Gerber! If you look at the swatch window below Gerber, you observe a dual purple/grey piece from a jersey he wore during his tenure with the Ducks, a rarity for sure!
2005-06 Victory Brodeur Complete Rainbow (base, silver, gold and black)
I couldn't hit the BIN button quicker than I did when the silver and gold Brodeur victory cards were posted a few months ago. Having already purchased the toughest, Victory Black /5, last year, the remaining parallels were proving exceedingly difficult to track down. So here are all the parallels together at last!
2005-06 UD SPGU Awesome Fabrics Justin Williams (63-100)
To date the only dual colour version of this card that I have seen.
2005-06 UD Big Playmakers Gomez (40-50) 3-colour swatch
A very unique card featuring a bright 3-colour jersey piece of Alaska's best. Also a great story teller if you have ever heard him featured on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast.
2005-06 Ultimate RPA Meszaros (3/25)
Up next is a card I picked up fairly cheap due to some conditioning issues, but I could not pass up the crazy Sens patch on this rookie! The mid-2000s jerseys produced some of the nicest looking patches to date!
2005-06 The Cup Rookies Richmond and Boogaard
A pair of 05-06 rookie cards from the first Cup run, I was particularly happy to add the Boogaard as his card prices have remained strong long after his untimely passing in the summer of 2011. Not sure if we will ever see another "Boogey man" in the league as he was one of the last true enforcers of the modern era.
2005-06 Steen Ice Cool Threads Patch Auto (4/15)
The latest addition to my ever growing Steen rookie year collection, this Ice addition features a beautiful 3-colour patch to go with a crisp blue auto. One of the nicer designs released that year.
2005 Canadian Fall Expo Howard #215 (1/10)
Its been a while since my last add to this set, and its a great rookie of the recently retired Jimmy Howard. This completes all of his Young Guns versions as I now own his YG BGS 10, HG /10 and the Fall Expo /10.
2005-06 McDonalds Autograph Iginla (17/50)
A card which unfortunately fell just outside of the top 10, this McDonalds redemption auto depicts the newest HHOF inductee Jarome Iginla. Though the print run states /50, its tough to say how many were actually redeemed and likely not all are accounted for.
Now lets get on with the top 10!
#10. 2005-06 Ultimate 6th Memorabilia Blades of Steel Ovechkin and Horton /25
Starting off the best 10, we have two cards from the Blades of Steel series of Ovechkin and Tim Horton, each /25. This is actually the first Tim Horton in my collection, and hopefully not the last!
#9. 2005-06 Victory Black David Leneveu #267 (4/5)
A seldom seen rookie parallel of a largely forgotten goaltender, this card improves my set completion to 69/300 or 23%.
#8. 2005-06 ITG Heroes and Prospects CHL Shield Pouliot 1/1
This is my second CHL shield from the H&P series, though this is a slightly more recognizable name than the one I already own. A once highly touted prospect, these shield cards have much more eye appeal and colours than their NHL counterparts.
#7. 2005-06 UD Powerplay Impact Parallels Brodeur /30 and Belfour /20
I may be in the minority here but I absolutely love these parallels. The rainbow foil and having each one limited to the player's jersey number make finding these special each and every time. I was able to find the Brodeur and Belfour, two first ballad HOF goaltenders, and numbered to 30 and 20 copies respectively.
#6. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate 6th Memorabilia R.O.Y Emblems Esposito (1/10)
One of the best Chicago patches I own, this eye catching 5-colour vintage patch takes 6th place on this countdown.
#5. 2005-06 SP Authentic Rarefied Rookies Brule (1/1)
These cards are quite rare to say-the-least, given that each card from this set is numbered 1/1. This Brule now gives me six cards Rarefied Rookie cards in my collection.
#4. 2005-06 ITG Heroes and Prospects Autograph Herb Carneige
Taking number 4 on the countdown is my first Herb Carneige autograph. A don't blame anyone for having never heard of this player, I too was not very familiar with his story until only a few years ago. Essentially, he is regarded as the best Afro-Canadian hockey player never to play in the NHL. He played with Jean Beliveau during his time with the Quebec Aces and was a great help to the young center showing him the ropes. A truly remarkable story and could very well have been the "Jackie Robinson of hockey" had circumstances been different.
I am not aware how many licensed products are out there that feature his autograph, I do know that his autograph from this set regularly sells north of $100 all day long. That is what made my purchase so surprising, I was able to hit the BIN on my PSA/DNA card for only $30! A card I have been after for years, I wasn't going to let that opportunity pass me by.

Let's get to my top three!
#3. 2005-06 UD High Gloss /10 (MAJOR SET UPDATE)
Well, I cannot believe I have gotten this far in building the 2005-06 UD High Gloss set but I've now surpassed the 50% completion mark! Technically, with my most recent addition, I have now achieved 50.1% complete. I will be making a separate post with the best of the 244 cards I have accumulated to date, perhaps in the new year as I have to make a best of 2021 post sometime this month.
My favorites from the most recent crop would be the Kovalchuk and the Matt Foy YG. I am dwindling down to the final few rookies needed and obtaining leads to the missing has become quite the challenge.
#2. 2005-06 ITG Heroes and Prospects Hero Memorabilia George Hainsworth SP (3-clr)
In second place is a 3-colour George Hainsworth jersey card from the H&P series. This card is actually a SP from the Heroes Memorabilia set, with only 30 copies produced. The aesthetics of this card are second to none, with the 1920s-1930s sweater piece popping out of the card. It is among my favorite cards in my collection.
#1. 2005-06 The Cup Legendary Cuts King Clancy (2/5)
And coming in first place is a vintage cut autograph from the inaugural 2005-06 Cup release, King Clancy! Not often do we see vintage featured in The Cup releases, but the first release did feature some little known cut autographs from some early hockey legends, including Clancy. A Toronto Maple Leafs legend, and one of the first hockey superstars, his career spanned the 1921-22 season with the original Ottawa Senators, until his retirement with Toronto in 1936-37. Although his hockey career as a defenseman was exceptional, his humanitarian efforts off of the ice are what left a lasting legacy. To this day, the NHL awards the King Clancy Memorial Trophy to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community.
A few extra special notes about the man, he was a member of the first Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup in 1932, coached the Montreal Maroons in 1937-38 and was purchased by the Conn Smyth and the Leafs off of a horse racing gamble which overcame an incredible 107-1 winnings odds. For the sake of time, if you wish to read more about that story just click the link here.
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what December and 2022 will bring, comments/feedback are welcome. Have a great weekend everyone!
