Finally got my APs back from MM2.

My first foray into the AP world and I'm quite happy. I won three off of everyone's favorite auction site from Mike Torrance. My hat goes off to him.

The first is a dual (and duel, I suppose) of Rhino. I sent Mike a pic of a Bowen statue, pics from a coupe of comics, and a rough idea of what I wanted. Mike simply said "I have some good ideas I think you'll like", and he certainly did.

The second is of Firestar. I simply told him I liked the old Superfriends-style costume and to use his imagination. A great use of color:

Nice stuff Joe, keep thinking of getting some AP's myself, but first I need to figure out what I'd actually ask for.

As part of their payment artists receive some "blank" sketch cards. Typically they get back 10 but it sometimes varies based on the number of sketch cards they submit for pack insertion. As far as Marvel Masterpieces goes, the only difference, really, is a slight color change and the word "PROOF" at the bottom. You can sort of make out the P-R-O on Firestar's leg.

Artists usually do one of two things--they sell the blanks, which is how I got mine, or they draw characters and sell the completed card. Either way, it's extra money in the artists' pockets.

With the blank ones usually you can work with the artists and describe what you're looking for, send them reference material, etc. There are some things that cannot draw, by decree of Marvel or DC or whomever, but generally it's free reign with the artist's imagination.

As I mentioned, this was my first set of APs--it won't be the last.
