Verified Trader,
Hello!
Very excited about today's post because it's something I'd been working on for some time. Back in 2007, I started picking up 2005-06 Cup base cards. At the time, they were afterthoughts, and I got quite a few of them inexpensively. I'd pick up a piece every now and then, but entering last year, I was still at only 56 out of 100. With nothing to really go for, I decided to take a run at finishing it.
But these cards were no longer afterthoughts! The days of getting 4 or 5 for $20 were long gone, and most individual cards sold for $20+. I dropped a few hundred getting up to 70% and I calculated that I would still need to spend at least $800 US to get the remaining 30.
That's when the entire set showed up on eBay for $3K CDN. I thought, "That's a fair price." But I only need 30 cards, so I passed.
The price dropped to $2500. I thought, "That's a good price." But I only need 30 cards, so I passed.
Then $2K. Wow. That's a great price. But...30 cards...
$1500. SOLD!

Now you might be thinking, "$800 US for 30 base cards?!" You better believe it. These things average $20 each these days, and the stars go for much more. This star in particular.

I estimate that it would cost $200 US to reel this one in now. Recent sales have been $180 and a negotiation to end the auction early, and the starting bid was $150. I like the condition on this card a lot too.
Who's #2? Is it a modern great?

I already owned these two, so these copies are gravy. And no, neither one is currently in the #2 slot, although Mario sells for around $70 when he shows up.
How about one of the Original Six legends?

Nope, this trio is criminally underappreciated. So underappreciated, that I already had all of them too.
No, the #2 has been this fellow:

He goes for about $100. Unfortunately, this copy has a dinged corner, but I can live with it.
The Cup is a goalie collector's dream. Out of 100 base cards, 24 are keepers including many of the greatest of all time. If I had to choose one modern goaltender to win one game, I would choose Saint Patrick. If he's not available, then it's one of these two:

And these guys would be my 4 and 5.

One thing I love about these early Cup sets are the heavy presence of Hall of Famers. The Islanders weren't a great team in 2006, so instead we get the dynasty.

The Cup also had two people whose RCs were in the 1974-75 set, but not as players:

Love the Grapes, but put him in a suit next time!
Which team got the most Cup love? Not surprisingly, it was an Original Six team:

Note: The greatest of them all is missing from the 2005-06 set. We'd have to wait another year for Bobby Orr to make his Cup debut. Only Bergeron and Leetch were active in this group.
Some other oddballs - here's the only player listed on a team different than the one he is pictured in:

Theodore joined the Avs late in the season. And finally, a player numbered to his jersey!

It's not the number that he's known for, but he did wear #53 during the 2005-06 season for Chicago.
Anyway, very pleased with this purchase. As for the 30 cards I need for my SECOND set, I may still go after them...just not very aggressively.
