New Canada Post Rates

Im lost... just send 8 packages an hour ago, 6 to the US and 2 to Canada... I paid $1.78 Per package for the States, and $1.05 to Canada... Not sure if the lady missed something or what? She is the one that usually ships for me, and i guess she just assumed that the rates are the same?

What will happen, if the rates indeed went up, and i know have an insufficient amount of stamps on the mailer? Will they just send the mailer back?

hmm.. maybe the rates are just better for us brantford-ians :P

and if not... looks like its time to switch to those super protective white envelopes ;)

Newfie...From what you describe it seems that your envelopes are too thick to go through regular mail. I send all my mailers regular and they all fit through the little gizmo they have to measure thickness (Like Magootz the clerks know me too so they stopped doing that) Anyways, if the item is too thick than its considered a parcel and not regular mail. There are three factors that determine the price, Weight, Size & thickness. Check the requirements on Canada Posts website and you should get away with using regular mail.

No problem with the small envelopes (#000) like you said as long as they fit through the slot. If the small envelope does not fit through the 1st slot and they put it through the 2nd slot and it goes through they use to classify it as oversize letter rate but no more it's called a small package and sent that way, when using a #00 or #0 as long as it fit through the 2nd slot it to was classified as a oversize letter the difference in rate is $2.00/3.00 less if sent as oversize letter. I called Canada Post Customer service and was told there are more changes taking effect Aug. 21/06 as to classification and rate charges on BB mailers. Also here is info taken off their web site.

Canada Post announces new shipping solution
Ottawa - Canada Post announces the introduction of a new international shipping service called Light Packet. An economical solution that facilitates the movement of lightweight, low-value goods to the United States and other international destinations, Light Packet has been designed to suit the needs of Canadian eBay members as well as other customers. The new service, which is priced 70% below the Small Packet service for shipments of goods up to 100 grams, is an investment by Canada Post to encourage Canadians to comply with existing customs and other regulatory requirements, and is a complementary addition to Canada Post's existing suite of international services.
"Reacting to the needs expressed by eBay members and other customers for reliable and affordable shipping services, Canada Post will introduce Light Packet at the same rate as Letter-post", said Gail Ryan, General Manager, International Product Management.

Last year, Canada Post became aware that small goods such as CDs and DVDs were being shipped via Letter-post, a product reserved, by regulation, for paper-based items only. Recognizing that the next available option, Small Packet, could prove expensive for its customers, Canada Post extended US/International Letter-post rates to applicable Small Packets sold at retail outlets, until a definitive solution could be found. As a result of numerous consultations with Canada Post customers, Light Packet was developed to provide that solution. The new product ensures that shipments to the US and other international destinations possess the appropriate customs documentation and complies with regulatory requirements at a more affordable price than Small Packet.

Effective August 21st, pricing for this new service will be equivalent to the corresponding Letter-post rates. For example, a 100 grams USA Light Packet item fitting the dimensions of Letter-post will cost $1.78, the same as USA Letter-post. Light Packet pricing will continue to be linked to Letter-post pricing until further notice. As an example, in January 2007, Letter-post prices will increase by 4% to $1.86 for 100 grams, and Light Packet will match that price. For the other weight steps, Canada Post will preserve the same cost per gram that currently exists on Letter-post rates.

"Our customers' success is our success. By limiting the financial impact related to sending small goods to other countries, we are working with Canadian businesses to ensure their prosperity and longevity," concluded Ryan.

Available exclusively at post offices, Light Packet will be the most cost-effective choice for shipping CDs, DVDs and other small goods (measuring up to 27 cm x 38 cm x 2 cm and weighing up to 500 grams) outside of Canada.

Its a conspiracy....... But what about the increase the US will have? Is shipping here going to be worth more? I already have had guys want me to compensate them for the increased shipping from there end. which makes little sense about the increase from my end. If I remember correctly the US pays less to ship to me then I do to them....I don't think they should use condoms it might end up more of a cost from our end. Might be more polite to kiss us first though :S

Guys, went to my P.O. today to try to clear this new canada Post mess. They tried this last fall..remember? The prices are effective as of July 24th but they made me read a R.T.M. they received from their H.O. that told them to hold off a while on the new prices so they shouldn't be charging the new rates. Another thing, the small package should only be for non paper items..CD's, diskets and so forth. I asked If I mail in a small triple 000 bubble mailer If they would charge me the small package rate and then answer was NO..depends on what you are shipping but they never seem to agree on any thing from one office to the other. The clerk told me that obvioulsy a CD cannot fit in so chances are that the same rate would apply..$1.05 within Canada and $1.78 to USA

...just my 2 cents worth of info I was told,
Alan.

Looks like things have settled down at the P.O. Today mailed a #000 mailer with 2 stacks of cards that totaled 21 cards. The postal clerk put it on the scale punched the zip code in and it came up as a light packet printed out a special label and the postage label at a cost of $1.78. No customs declaration needed.

Hi Newfie
Here is what is going on. They are using Small Packet labels for what are now called Light packet. They ship for the same price as before(1.78) plus tax to the USA. You do not need them for inside Canada. The difference is there is no insurance on the Light Packet. The Light Packet labels have the insurance info on the back Xed out. Make sure you ask for the Light Packet the next time you go to the PO unless you want to insure your package.
If they tell you there is no such thing tell them to check out the Canada Post web site and do some reading.
Hope this makes things as clear as mud....Don
