Jets sign CB Woolfolk, cut veteran T Clement

Associated Press

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- A day after signing Damien Woody to play offensive right tackle, the New York Jets cut last year's starter, Anthony Clement.

They also signed cornerback Andre Woolfolk, a former first-round pick by Tennessee who was out of football in 2007.

Clement started all 33 games, including one in the playoffs, since being signed as a free agent in 2006.

Woolfolk played 39 games in four seasons with Tennessee, making 11 starts and intercepting three passes.

Cardinals sign defensive end LaBoy to five-year contract

Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Defensive end Travis LaBoy has signed a five-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, the team said Tuesday.

LaBoy's deal reportedly is worth $22 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed.

The 6-foot-3, 260-pound LaBoy played four seasons with Tennessee after being drafted in the second round by the Titans -- the 42nd pick overall -- out of Hawaii in 2004. He is expected to compete with Bertrand Berry for the starting job.

In a reserve role last season, he played in 13 games with six sacks, 20 tackles, four forced fumbles, one interception and one fumble recovery. Overall, LaBoy appeared in 54 games with Tennessee, 20 as a starter. He had 19.5 sacks, 175 tackles (100 solo), five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one interception. He had a career high 6.5 sacks in 2005.

The team also signed tight end Jerame Tuman to a two-year contract. He appeared in six games, one as a starter, for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season before going on injured reserve Nov. 14. Primarily a blocking tight end, he had spent his entire nine-year NFL career with Pittsburgh. He appeared in 121 games, 56 starts, with 43 catches for 500 yards and a touchdown. He also appeared in 10 postseason games with six starts. He caught seven passes for 57 yards and a touchdown in his playoff career.

Tuman was released by the Steelers on Feb. 8.

Ken Whisenhunt was offensive coordinator for the Steelers before being named head coach at Arizona a year ago.

Meanwhile, linebacker Brandon Chillar, a free agent from the St. Louis Rams, worked out at the Cardinals training facility on Tuesday.

The Cardinals wanted to retain outside linebacker Calvin Pace but could not match the stunning six-year, $42 million contract, including a $20 million signing bonus, given to him by the New York Jets. Pace was a first-round pick in 2003 but started only six games in three seasons before last year, when he took over from injured Chike Okeafor and had by far his best pro season.

Jaguars sign former first-round draft pick Kennedy, three others

Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy and three other free agents to contracts Wednesday.

They also signed offensive tackles Pete McMahon and Ryan Gibbons and long-snapper Brett Goode.

Kennedy, drafted 12th overall by St. Louis in the 2003 NFL Draft, spent the 2007 training camp with Denver before being released in final cuts. He was signed by Chicago in mid-December, played in the final three games and recorded three tackles.

Kennedy has 152 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 56 career games. He started 16 games for the Rams in 2006 and finished with career-high 55 tackles.

It's expected that Kennedy will help the Jaguars replace three-time Pro Bowl lineman Marcus Stroud, who was traded to Buffalo last week. The Jaguars also decided not to re-sign free agent defensive tackle Grady Jackson.

McMahon, Gibbons and Goode were in training camp with the Jaguars last season and were waived in September.

Kearse returns to his roots, agrees to second stint with Titans

March 6, 2008

CBSSports.com wire reports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with defensive end Jevon Kearse on Thursday.

The 31-year-old was the Defensive Rookie of the Year after Tennessee made him the 16th overall pick in the 1999 draft.

He had 47.5 sacks with the Titans and made three Pro Bowl teams, but left in 2004 for a free-agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kearse never achieved the success with the Eagles that he did in Tennessee, totaling just 22 sacks and suffering a knee injury that cost him much of the 2006 season.

He was benched toward the end of the 2007 season and released as a salary cap cut last week.

Giants sign QB Carr to back up Manning

March 12, 2008

CBSSports.com wire reports

Eli Manning and the New York Giants have a new backup quarterback.

David Carr signed Wednesday in a move that gives the Super Bowl champions an experienced backup who like Manning was a No. 1 pick overall.

Terms were not immediately available.

"I have a lot of calluses," Carr said. "I'm like an old carpenter I've been through it. If you let that stuff affect you, you're not going to be able to do your job. One of the reasons I'm excited about coming here is they protect the quarterback well and they have playmakers on the outside."

Taken first by Houston in the 2002 Draft, Carr's career has faltered in recent seasons. He was released by the Texans after the 2006 season and signed a two-year, $6 million deal last year with the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers released him after this past season.

Carr had a 58.3 passer rating with just three touchdown passes and five interceptions after replacing the injured Jake Delhomme. Carr was eventually replaced by 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde and then undrafted rookie Matt Moore.

Carr will compete with Anthony Wright and Jared Lorenzen for the backup job to Manning, the No. 1 overall pick in 2004.

The former Fresno State product has played in 82 career games with 79 starts. He started all 16 games four times in his five seasons with the Texans, including the last three.

Careerwise, Carr has completed 1,316 of 2,206 passes for 14,026 yards, 62 touchdowns and 70 interceptions. His career passer rating is 74.4. He has been sacked 262 times, including a record 76 for 411 yards in losses as a rookie in '04.

"I think any player coming into a situation like this has to prove something," Carr said. "I have to work just as hard or harder than the guys there. They've been to the top. They won a Super Bowl. They don't need our help."

Joining the Giants will reunite Carr with quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer, his offensive coordinator in his first four years in Houston.

"I'm excited to meet up with Chris again," Carr said. "That's really the main reason I came up here. He has the best feel for what I'm doing. He knows what's best as far as what my mechanics should be when I throw the football."

Giants coach Tom Coughlin called Carr a talented, athletic player.

"We look forward to working with him on the fundamentals of the game," Coughlin said. "We do have some technical things to work on, but we are anxious to work with him in our program. If we can place him in a positive environment, perhaps he can reclaim some of the things that people saw to draft him in the first round."

Carr had career-high totals of 54 passes and 39 completions in Giants Stadium against the Jets on Nov. 26, 2006. He tied the NFL single-game record with 22 consecutive completions vs. Buffalo on Nov. 19. 2006. Carr has passed for more than 300 yards four times, including a career-high 372 against Minnesota on Oct. 10, 2004. He has directed 11 career game-winning drives in which the decisive points were scored in the fourth quarter or overtime, including one last Oct. 7 in New Orleans.

Seahawks sign veteran K Mare to replace free agent Brown

March 27, 2008
CBSSports.com wire reports

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks have signed former Pro Bowl kicker Olindo Mare to a two-year contract to likely replace departed free agent Josh Brown.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed the length of the deal in an e-mail to the Associated Press on Thursday evening. He declined to comment on terms.

Mare spent 10 years with Miami and is the Dolphins' all-time leader in field goals (245), scoring (1,048 points) and field-goal accuracy (.809). He was 10-for-17 on field goals for the New Orleans Saints last season.

Brown, a key to the Seahawks' four consecutive NFC West championships, signed a $14.2 million, five-year contract with the rival St. Louis Rams last month.

Mare has some large kicking shoes to fill in Seattle.

Brown set a career high with 127 points last season, sixth most in the league, and made an even 80 percent of his field goal attempts (116-for-145) in five seasons. He was especially accurate in the clutch and from long range.

The Seahawks thought Brown was valuable enough to offer a contract worth $14 million, but for what Brown said was more years and with more back-loaded money that was not guaranteed. Last year, the Seahawks cherished him so much they used their franchise-player designation on him.

Mare, who also considered signing with the Denver Broncos this week, has six 100-point seasons. In his Pro Bowl season of 1999, he had a career-high 144 points and set a then-NFL record with 39 field goals.

Mare has played in 168 career games and made 255 of 320 field goals (.797), with a career long of 54 yards. He missed the final three games of last season with the Saints after injuring his leg making a tackle on a kickoff.

Even though he is proven, the 34-year-old may have competition for Brown's job.

Wednesday, knowing Mare was due to Seahawks team headquarters for a visit, team president Tim Ruskell said Seattle was continuing to evaluate kickers available in next month's draft.

"We like a lot of kickers in the college game," Ruskell said. "I could foresee where we have a veteran and a rookie in training camp fighting it out. That would be the perfect world for us."

Saints sign cornerback Glenn
Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints have signed free agent Aaron Glenn, hoping the veteran cornerback can shore up a shoddy pass defense.

Glenn, a 14-year veteran and former first-round draft pick who started four games for Jacksonville in 2007, has 41 career interceptions, six of them for touchdowns. He ranks fifth among active interception leaders in the NFL.

Familiar face: Vikes bring back Frerotte to protect, push Jackson
Associated Press

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. --

The Minnesota Vikings have signed quarterback Gus Frerotte -- again.

The 14-year veteran served as Daunte Culpepper's backup for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and now he's in line to do the same for incumbent Tarvaris Jackson.

The Vikings were looking for more polish at the position, and possibly someone to push Jackson for the job. Brooks Bollinger and Kelly Holcomb failed to produce when Jackson was injured, leaving coach Brad Childress without a reliable alternative when Jackson was struggling.

Bollinger is still on the roster, but Holcomb was released.

During Frerotte's last stint with Minnesota, he had a successful 2½ games as the starter when Culpepper hurt his back in September 2003.

Frerotte has 82 NFL starts, but most of those came at the front end of his career with the Washington Redskins from 1994-98. He spent the last two seasons with St. Louis, starting three games for the Rams in 2007 and throwing seven touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

Frerotte is more accomplished than Holcomb or Bollinger, but several backup quarterbacks were signed before him since the market opened in March. The Vikings were interested in trading for Houston's Sage Rosenfels, but the Texans weren't willing to part with him with starter Matt Schaub's health in question.

Notes: The Vikings finalized their preseason schedule on Tuesday. They'll host Seattle on Friday, Aug. 8, and Pittsburgh on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Tomlinson signs 2-year deal with Jets

Sunday, March 14, 2010

(AP) — NEW YORK - LaDainian Tomlinson is bolting for the Big Apple.

The New York Jets signed the former Chargers running back to a two-year contract Sunday, adding an aging star to the NFL's top-ranked rushing offense last season.

Tomlinson's agent, Tom Condon, confirmed the signing Sunday night. The Jets had not yet announced the deal.

"He wanted to go to a team that he thought had a chance to compete for the championship," Condon told the AP in a telephone interview. "He wanted to go somewhere where he had a chance to have a significant role, and so with the Jets he also was going to be very familiar with the offensive system."

The Jets reached the AFC championship game last season, eliminating Tomlinson and the Chargers along the way.

Quinn traded to Broncos for a draft pick, Hillis

Browns trade Quinn to Broncos

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. (AP)

Cleveland traded quarterback Brady Quinn to Denver in exchange for fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2012. The Browns later dealt linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to Oakland for an undisclosed draft pick.

Quinn's departure came a day after the Browns agreed to terms with free agent quarterback Jake Delhomme on a two-year contract. Meanwhile, the decision to deal Wimbley was a bit of a surprise after he showed flashes last season of being the kind of player he was when he recorded 11 sacks in his rookie year.

Report: Niners trade QB Shaun Hill to Lions

Report: Niners trade Hill to Lions
PFW staff, ProFootballWeekly.com
Mar 14, 3:16 pm EDT

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the Niners have agreed to trade QB Shaun Hill(notes) to the Lions for a seventh-round draft pick in 2011, according to a league source. Hill, who was 10-6 as a starter with the Niners, became expendable when the Niners signed free agent QB David Carr(notes) to compete with fellow former first-round draft pick Alex Smith for the team’s starting QB job.

Hill, who was replaced as the Niners’ starting QB by Smith six games into the 2009 season, has a history with Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who coached Hill in Minnesota. Linehan was also very familiar with Hill as the head coach with the Rams. Two years ago, Hill and the Niners swept the season series from Linehan’s Rams.

Just watching the baseball game, and they have confirmed that Donovan McNabb has been traded to the Washington Redskins for the 37th pick and a conditional 2011 pick.
