I was fortunate enough to have hot garage passes for this year's race at Watkins Glen. Never had garage passes before, so I didn't know what to expect. My uncle (who got us the passes) is a pro at this, and he said to bring this and that. I didn't want to get caught up in all that, so I only brought a few things, not expecting to get anything signed. The garage area is amazing.....everyone should have a shot to get back there! You really need to be on your toes, with your head on a swivel.....everything is moving so fast.....not to mention it's very loud!!
I brought a couple Glen hats from previous races......I also brought an Office Depot diecast and a 2007 Home Depot Watkins Glen Race Winner diecast. Again, I totally expect to not get anything. After hanging out in the garage area that Friday, I started to scope things out more closely on Saturday.....watch what other people were doing. One thing I did not want to do was run all over the garage area for autographs.......for one, I'm not interested in getting everyone's signature.......two, I'm not running all over....I just want to have a nice, relaxed time there!
So, I was hanging around Stewart's garage when he came in from one of their practices. I stood with a small group of people, in hopes he would come out. He came just outside the garage, did an interview and then went back in. You could hear people grumbling. Most of the people left. Two or three of us remained. It was about ten minutes later, but he finally came out. I walked along side of him and handed him the Watkins Glen diecast. When he handed it back, I asked him a question about racing in Ft Wayne, Indiana.....something he does almost every year, and I've attended for the past few years. He answered politely and went on his way, signing a few more things. The next day, I got Greg Zipadelli's signature, which was way easier to get, relative to Stewart's.
So, here's the picture. Thank you for taking the time to read!
P.S. Like I said, I wasn't going nuts with the autos....however, on Saturday I did get Kenny Wallace and Patrick Carpentier. I also got Steve Post (a pit/garage reporter from Sirius radio who's from my area).
