we all know they're both at fault,but who do you blame more the players or the owners
 
Dont forget corperations that drive tickets out of reach for the normal fan. Will had it right. Plenty of blame for everyone. I dont forsee this thread going well so heres hoping everyone is civil. Unlike the NHL and the PA. lol.
 
I blame the players more than the owners. These guys make way more than they should. If you look at the big 4 sports leagues, NHL players make a much higher salary in comparison to the profits/loss of owners. Hiring Donald Fehr, a man who knows or cares little about hockey was a mistake. This hard line stance is not only going to cost them a full season's paycheque but also a loss in overall revenue to share. 50% of $3.3 billion is way more than 57% of, say $2 billion. If they seriously think the fans will just come back after this, they are extremely ignorant

I agree with all of this, except I still think the fans will come back as soon as they can.
 
Of course the fans will come back, they're just as ignorant as everyone else. How else do you explain the willingness to pay hundreds of dollars to watch multi-millionaires who gripe and moan about how much MORE money they want.

As far as live hockey is concerned I'll just pay my $20 to go see the local junior team play. Usually far more entertaining with a better atmosphere anyway.
 
At this Point ..... and for most of it to be honest....THE PLAYERS

They make a good chunk of coin. The owners take all of the risk, they OWN the teams....they have made some poor decisions no question.....but a 10% roll back a couple months ago, looks pretty good considering there may be a 100% roll back if the season is a no go.

If many are willing to go play in Europe for a lot less, why not play in North America for more than that, even if it is a touch less than the previous year.

I only feel bad for the ushers, and other employees who work at the arenas or along side the teams who make a fraction of what the lowest paid player makes.
 
yes we as fans can be part of the blame for lengthy lockouts,in previos situations there have been no boycotts to show our frustrations,both the players and the owners know we will be back just by adding some little incentive package to reel us in(by the way i haven't been to a nhl game in 20 years)
i blame betman for trying to make hockey work in cities it dosen't belong,however if they eliminated those 10 teams,thats a minimum of 250 players eliminated, so the only solution is for the players and rich teams have to give up more $ so betman can live his dream, i'm sure the nhlpa dosen't want to loose these 250 jobs
 
I put the blame on the owners 100%. You can blame the players all you want because they make millions and take no risk etc. etc. but at some point the players have to say enough is enough and break the cycle of the owners locking out the players every time the C.B.A. is up just so they can grab back more money for themselves.

It's my opinion that if the owners handled this a different way from day 1 we would be playing hockey right now and the owners would have their 50-50 split of revenues.
 
If the players didn't want this to happen why did they select Donald Fehr to be their Rep. He has an ego just as massive as Bettman's. They have both drawn their own line in the sand and those lines won't merge any time soon. In the meantime go out and support your local junior or college team.

See my above post. If your a player you have to break the cycle and prove to the owners you will not be pushed around anymore. Nobody better then Fehr to accomplish that.
 
i support the owners. Some have to write checks to cover losses and the players still get paid.
THe sports business is very different from other industries. In the real world business owners have the ability to close locations, change personal and modify the day to day. Sports franchises can not. IF "phoenix" was run like a business they would cut costs not to lose money or fold up shop. The players have not suffered one bit, in fact they have got raises. Hard to feel sorry for them.

That being said, i hope that there are provisions that penalize owners and players that use a lock out/strike as a regular bargaining tactic.

I do think it is funny when people swear they wont go to a game to support either side. I dont go to many games anymore. I went from seasons tix to 1/3 to nothing over the last few years. I still will watch on tv so i am still supporting them indirectly. Most will watch on tv. (in canada)

hopefully they get some work done without the two massive egos not present.
 
it baffles me when you hear the players supporters talk about how they're doing this for the players of the future just like the players from the past have got us to where we are today,i would understand this if the money was there(believe me i have been through the same scenario with the auto talks)butwhen the money isin't there management has no choice to stand their ground.
i'm sure the players of the future would rather see them playing,knowing a year or two without hockey could cost them their lifetime dream.
if the players really wanted to do something nice for hockey,maybe they should consider doing something for the players of the 50's and 60's who never made a lot of money and are on a very low pension
 
The players - 100% greed. We have seen some of the players spoke up against the players union. If I go to my employers/corporation and said, hey we want 50/50 on profits... I would be out of a job. :crazy:

Push them around? Their salaries increased 40% in the last 7 years. The system is flawed and needs to be fixed. If the players think they can play hard ball with the owners, they are sadly mistaken. We'll see what happens when they realize they've lost a full year's salary.

You think fans in small markets in the US will fill the seats once the NHL comes back? If you think attendance was bad in Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Phoenix before, just wait and see what happens after this mess is figured out. The NHL was just beginning to make a name for itself in the U.S. Now, it's not even back page news...
 
I believe that fans in Canada will come back quickly once the lockout ends. I've spoken to a couple of season ticket holders here in Calgary, and they don't want to lose the seats they've had for years. The demand for tickets may wane a little at first, but the Canadian fans will come back. The concern is the US teams. NYR, Philly, Pitt, Detroit won't have too much trouble rebounding, but teams like Anaheim, Nashville, Columbus, and the FLA teams will be hard pressed to replace what's been lost with this lockout. Say what you will about these being bad markets, but roughly 1/3 of the teams in the NHL are in 'nontraditional' markets, and these franchises can certainly drag down the rest if the fans don't come back. Contraction may ultimately be the answer, which would lead to player job losses. This begs the question, "what are the players fighting for in the first place?"
 
I put all of the blame on the owners since they are the one's giving out the millions of dollars to the players and the agents are only the one's agreeing to what the owners are offering. It's one of the most hyporcritical situations I have seen in my life and quite frankly I am sick of it.
 
I put the blame mostly on the owners, they are the ones who agree to pay the players the salary they signed for, and now they decide that they don't want to pay it, that's the way I look at it. If I was a player and agreed to a contract, I would want it honoured. It signing a binding contract in my view.
