As some of you already know, I've been asked to pen a book on hockey's history, with an eye towards memorabilia.

So far I've come across some truly amazing stories, ranging from Florida Panther Booster Club rats to Brian Propp talking about an indispensable jersey that hangs in his man cave.

Naturally, the toughest part of writing the book is getting my hands on images (and thanks to those who have given me some already). A large amount of what will be entered are from my own collection, which thankfully is quite varied and extensive.

As a sneak preview, here are a few of the better items in my collection.

Let's start with tickets

I'm not sure what finally prompted me to keep a ticket stub back in '92 after seeing so many games in my youth, but I'm glad I have this one. This was during Team Canada's tour of Canadian cities. Unfortunately, Lindros didn't make the tripe, but Sean Burke did. I still have vivid memories of watching him pare down his stick after the pre-game skate. I should've picked up a piece and kept it also...

My first non-Jets game at the old Met Center. Hull vs. Modano in their early days can't be beat.

One of the more unique collectibles out there are the "items that never were", like this Oilers tic printed for their "Cup" run

My parents went to a lot of WHA Jets games in their day. They had four stubs and passed them down to me. Howe vs. Hull. Doesn't get better.

Next up... a unique pocket sched, which may soon find its way to a certain board member ;)

Lord knows I have no clue who the Ice Sharks are. I picked this up during my sched hounding days on a trip to Fargo, North Dakota

How about a Stanley Cup?

This is one of the cooler items I've seen in the last few years. For those who haven't seen these at Wally world or Canadian Tire yet, the NHL and some chocolate manufacturer teamed up for Easter to produce mega-sized chocolate eggs. Inside the shell is a kit to build this amazing display of Cup and banner, featuring the Original Six teams.

Next up is a sampling from table hockey, and if anyone is or knows an expert, please send them my way.

From the 80s Coleco games. The stickers themselves are so hard to find in good condition because of all the abuse they took during games, but the Stanley Cup from the tables, which were actually insanely well etched, are second to none.

Naturally, pucks are going to be a huge part of the book. I have a fairly decent collection of my own, including a few gamers

One of my new faves. At the opening game of the Jets 2.0 existance, players signed souvenir inaugural pucks with proceeds going to the families of Lokomotiv victims. My sister and her boyfriend picked up this Ladd for me.

To the best of my knowledge, this was the first mass-produced game mem piece. The Avs cut up the ice from their Stanley Cup play and embedded it in a plastic, see-through puck.

From the "collectibles that don't get the respect they deserve" file comes this Zellers Masters of Hockey multi-signed puck. This was part of the program that was a redemption for "Club Z" points. Others included jerseys, single-signed pucks and auto'd cards. The sigs on this particular puck include Cheevres, Keon, Kelly, Pilote, Henri Richard, Beliveau, Ullman and McDonald

And still my favourite puck...

WHA game used puck from the league's first year. Authenticated for me by Classic Collectibles, the puck came from an Ottawa Nationals game during a sparse time when they did not have a logo puck done up.

I'm going to end off the preview with something I'm admittedly very lucky to have.

My parents come from the "shmata" business - clothing industry. Winnipeg has been the hub of textiles for years, but was hit hard by Chinese importing. They're one of the few companies left here.

Over the years they've been part of some amazing projects, including producing clothing for movies and jackets for the World Juniors.

Their connections were always kind to them and gave them samples for them and their kids. One company in particular knew I was a huge hockey fan and gave me crests they produced for the NHL and other hockey programs.

StanleyCupPatch.jpg

I still have to pick up a puck from this series, but this will one day make an incredible display item. It's the only Stanley Cup patch I have, but it's never going anywhere.

And finally, my childhood favourite...

From the '91 tourney. There's a pinhole in the blue from when I had it up on my wall, but it's hardly noticeable. I can't think of anything in my collection that is as unique as this piece.

Looking forward to sharing more collectibles in the book, which releases in September 2013.
