Norris Finalists: Lidstrom, Chara and Weber

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=560924

Even though he probably doesn't deserve it, I'm hoping for Lidstrom. He finished in the negatives(-2) for the first time in his career this year, but he did have a great offensive season.

I think Visnovsky got robbed here, he at least deserved the acknowledgement for the great numbers he put up this season.

I think Visnovski got hosed a bit, but can't really complain too much about the 3 finalists I guess.

My vote would go to Chara, +33 / lead the entire league in that category, 44 points, a couple of GWG, second in SOG, played in 81 of their 82 games, not too shabby.

even though i hate the Ducks i think Lubo got screwed and i'm a little surprised Yandle wasn't nominated either.
even though Lidstrom and Chara were good this year, i think they were nominated on reputation.

How in the world is Visnovsky not up there?

This has to be a joke or something. That would be like not nominating Danny Sedin for Hart this year.....

Take Chara off, as much as I like him he shouldnt even be in the top 5 this year.

What a joke.

I agree on Lubo, but I'm just curious why you feel Chara isn't top 5? His team had a great year, he lead the league in +/-, solid offensive numbers, etc. To each his own obviously, just interesting that you don't even have him top 5. Thanks

NO Lubo and No Yandle but Lidstrom th dinosaur makes it on to the list....This is primarily because Detroit gets so much air time and coverage in comparision to LA and Phoenix....Oh well the only trophy of any importance in the NHL is the Cup anyway....these other trophies are totally popularity based IMO.

Maybe time to watch the way Lidstrom plays defense instead of looking at numbers. Try watching how EVERY coach tries getting his top line OFF the ice when Lidstom is on it. Try watching how good the Wings are at breaking out of their own end - maybe you would see that is the responsibility of Lidstrom and his young pupil - Kronwall. Maybe listen to the GM's in the league that still say Lidstrom is simply the best position defenseman that there is. And maybe watch the way he played over half the year with a Rookie partner of one ilk or another since Stuart & Rafalski both missed chunks of time this year. Take any team in the League - and Lidstrom is still on the top pairing.... that should say it all.

It is pretty hard to distinguish between the top 7 or 8 d-men this year at all. So many bring different things to the table. Sure Visnovsky deserved a mention.. ...as did Yandle, come to think of it so did the others. Was Chara that good or was it Tim Thomas stellar goal play that did it??? Were Yandle and Weber far superior... or was it the defensive system in Phoenix & Nashville that allowed them to lead the league in fewest goals allowed (Phoenix)???? Cheer for the point scorers and mention how Chara & Weber had 48 points or so - but Lidstrom had 20% more! Oops Visnovsky led the league with 68 points and had +/- of 18!!

If it were a pure popularity contest - I am pretty sure that Weber playing for Nashville would not get the nod.

Im a huge B's fan, and watch many of there games. Chara had an off year, and despite being part of one of the top defenses in the game, was not the game changer I have seen him be.

If it makes you feel any better, I would put Chara 6th this year.

I would also rank Lubo, Yandle, and perhaps Ehrhoff (sleeper pick of the year) as more pertinent dmen to their team this year.

I am just glad to see no one say Bfuglien should be there. He would be a dominant power forward, but unless he is scoring 35 goals from the blueline, he shouldnt be mentioned for Norris on scoring alone.

Yeah, I wouldn't have Chara on there either. Barely cracked the top 20 in D scoring. I would rate Yandle, Visnovsky and likely Letang ahead of Chara this season.

Is scoring the only aspect of winning the Norris? You over look he led the ENTIRE league in +/- with a 33. I'm not saying he should win the Norris, but to say he doesn't deserve to be there because he barely made the top 20 in scoring is a little off in my opinon.

If you want to know how important of a defender Chara is, take a look at game 2 in the Boston/Montreal series. Plus you add in the fact that Chara was voted the most difficult defender to play against in the league, BY the players...and he was the first Dman picked in the Allstar draft, I think there is compelling evidence that Chara deserves some acknowledgment at the very least

here is the poll i refer to..special attention to paragraph 3 - http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/hockey/comments/cbc_releases_results_of_nhlpa_player_poll/

Reputation has a lot to do with nominees for the Norris. Hence why Yandle and Lubo didn't get in the final 3. I saw Lidstrom/Konstantinov both get snubbed early in their careers when they did everything they should have to at least get nominated. You gotta put a couple years together to get the respect from the guys voting. It may not seem right but it's just an award and the players know who are the best in the league anyway!

Only picked first becasue Lidstrom was a captain

And thats making the statement that Lidstrom would have been the first Dman to go. Nobody could possibly know if that would have happened

That also doesnt change the fact that 34% of the players voted Chara as the most difficult defender to play against...

Im not arguing for Chara over anyone else, in fact I dont think he will the Norris, I just think he is rightfully in the running...he has been phenominal this year
