Neat concept - especially the means of distribution... should get a pretty good selection of "blasts from the past" with the set size. Here's the scoop from the In the Game newsletter that I got by email tonight:

ANNOUNCING 2004-05 IN THE GAME FRANCHISES!

In The Game is proud to announce our second brand of hockey cards of the season, 2004-05 NHL Franchises.
This NHL licensed set features an expansive lineup of retired greats - everyone from Hall of Famers to regional favorites. Emphasis is not only placed on players from the Original Six franchises (Boston, Detroit, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Montréal) but also from newer franchises with a rich history including the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks.

Of special note are players featured from a number of franchises that no longer exist including the Oakland Seals, California Golden Seals, Atlanta Flames, Colorado Rockies, Winnipeg Jets, Québec Nordiques, and the Minnesota North Stars.

The entire base set will consist of 450 cards. The brand will be released in three stages at three different times: a Canadian release featuring 150 players from Canadian teams is scheduled for release in February 2005; an Eastern U.S. version will feature another 150 players from Eastern U.S. teams; a Western U.S. version will include another 150 players from Western U.S. teams. The base set will be numbered from #1-450.

The base cards will be printed on traditional cardboard stock and will feature a retro-style design. Collectors will pull an average of two Autograph cards and one game-used memorabilia card per box. Averages are a reflection of the entire production run and are not a guarantee of what is available in every box.

The always-popular He Shoots, He Scores Decoy/Redemption Points Program will once again be offered in this brand.

Tired of retro products.
ITG missed the boat on this.
UD has already released 2 legends products this year.
And the idea of spanning it over 3 releases and all regional?
Don't know about that one.

Well, as much as I'm sick of the retro stuff coming out, this might be good because I'll finally pull out some Canucks, I'll take a wait and see approach until I see the checklist.

The two-auto-per-box idea looks like something out of H&P, but I like it.

I think you're going to get a large variety of autos from tons of players, even no-namers... but I'm ok with it, because it looks like it'll be priced similarly to H&P as well. Meaning, no paying 20 dollars for a pack of Legendary Sigs to pull a "bad" auto. At this price point, having such a wide variety could be a cool thing.

Then again, we don't know all the details on this product and I might be reading too much into it.

If it's the same price point as H&P, which was 80/box at the expo.
that's 40$ per auto.
Or,
if you factor in the GU,
about 26-7/per memo.

Hmmm....I wonder....think they mighta gone to former Nordiques for example to get autographs? Like say, current Avs? It's possible. The licensing doesn't allow for production of players featured on their current teams...what about defunct ones?

No Whalers? pffffffffffft :p

Think about the possible autos:

Gordie Howe
Marty Howe
Mark Howe
Bobby Hull
Rick Ley
Mike Rogers
John Garrett (also from TSN)
Greg Millen (also from CBC)
Dave Keon
Pierre Larouche
Blaine Stoughton
Liut
Tim Kerr
Rick Macleish
Francis
Dineen
S. Turgeon
U. Samuelsson
Verbeek
Zalapski
Holik
Sanderson
Propp
Pronger
Carson
O'Neill
Primeau
Giguere
Shanny
Coffey
and others I may have missed.

I think the thing that makes this product more appealing to me than the 2 UD Retro products is the set size ... you're not stuck with the same old 40 or 50 players (I hope) in the set and that's it... I'm hoping for some cards of some good old time Pens --- Pierre Larouche, Gary Rissling, Ron Stackhouse, Dave Burrows, Syl Apps, and the list goes on...

I guess I take a different view of the product because I'm not into it just for the Memorabilia cards ... give me some fresh (old) faces on some base cards and I'm happy (don't get me wrong ... I'd rather be chasing cards of new Pens like Ben Eaves, Ryan Whitney, and Evgeni Malkin, but that ain't gonna happen).
