Hi,

I was talking to a collector who only collects card #X from a set. More specifically they will only buy the 5th card in a checklist of any set from low end to high end.

I found it interesting to hear his reasoning. Basically, he can't afford to chase all the hit cards so this keeps him into the hobby without killing his wallet. He can search commons boxes and singles on ebay and slowly fill his collection. As for the number 5, well he didn't why he chose that number either.

Does anyone else have this sort of obscure method of collecting? Most of us are player collectors, set collectors, but this is the first I have heard of this sort of collecting. I found it very intriguing to be honest.

Let us here some of the "more abstract" collecting habits from some of you...

not really about me but i know a guy at the lcs who only trades for unopened packs..its weird he will goto ebay spend tons of cash on singles then takes them to the lcs and trades for boxes..i asked why he did it that way and he chuckled and said the lcs doesnt give me ebay bucks lol

I collect 3 of every Vernon card (except 1/1's and slabbed).

This started from two reasons:
1. 9-card pages were all the rave when I started collecting 23 years ago and I really liked how three of the same card looked on a page rather than one of each.
2. Vernon is a VERY small market and back before eBay existed I would find a tough pull card about once a year! So to prevent my collection from dying, I expanded on what was available (commons and parallels).

Seems perfectly normal to me! Or am I  ?
