Blackhawks claim D Jarred Tinordi off waivers from Rangers

The Chicago Blackhawks claimed defenseman Jarred Tinordi off waivers from the New York Rangers on Monday.

The 30-year-old Tinordi scored a goal in seven games with New York last season. He was selected by Montreal in the first round of the 2010 draft.

The 6-foot-6 Tinordi made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in 2013. He has two goals and 11 assists in 109 career regular-season games, also playing for Arizona, Nashville and Boston. He also has made 13 postseason appearances.

Coyotes claim 2017 first-round pick Juuso Valimaki

Arizona Coyotes claimed defenseman Juuso Valimaki off waivers from the Calgary Flames.

Valimaki is the second player from the 2017 NHL Draft’s first round to get moved over the weekend after the St. Louis Blues dealt Klim Kostin to the Edmonton Oilers. Valimaki was the 16th overall selection.

It’s hard to classify Valimaki’s career at this point. If you’d consider him a bust, it’s certainly not his fault – he’s missed considerable time to injuries over the course of his development, including the entire 2019-20 season. Valimaki played in just nine NHL games with the Flames in 2021-22 after being a full-time player in 2020-21, though, and he had 18 points in 35 games with the AHL’s Stockton Heat. His role within the organization was slipping under the new Darryl Sutter regime.

Now, he gets his second shot at a regular lineup spot, this time with the Coyotes. With Jakob Chychrun injured to start the season, Valimaki could conceivably even earn a top-four spot, slotting in on the second pairing behind Shayne Gostisbehere at left defense. He was passable as a full-time player in that 2020-21 season, notching 11 points in 46 games and holding his own during what was a tough season for the Flames overall.

Senators Sign Brassard to One-Year Deal

The Ottawa Senators have signed forward Derick Brassard to a one-year contract after inviting him to training camp on a PTO.

Derrick Brassard is back in the Nation's Capitol.

The Ottawa Senators made their reunion with Brassard official on Monday morning, upgrading the veteran forward's professional tryout offer into a one-year contract worth $750,000

Brassard entered Senators camp this fall with the unfortunate distinction of being the central return in one of the worst trades in club history, headlining the package that came Ottawa's way in exchange for Mika Zibanejad back in 2016.

The careers of both players have taken drastically different paths since then.

Zibanejad has blossomed into a legitimate superstar for New York. At the same time, Brassard struggled to remain a productive middle-six center and has since seen himself bounce around between seven different teams over the past 10 seasons.
