I teach grade 5, and I give away most of my base to the kids I teach, so awhile back when Ryan, aka JacktheRipper, offered up some base cards, I let him know that if he had any leftovers, I would gladly take them to use as giveaways in my class. They are good for prize draws I have for excellent behavior, hard work, etc.

Well, I went to get my mail last night, and I see I have a parcel. At first I didn't remember ordering anything, and then I see it is from Ohio. Ryan lives in Ohio.

I cracked the box open, and inside is a GREAT big shoebox full of base cards (stuff from this year mostly, and some from previous years). Had to be a few thousand cards in the box. Artifacts, MVP, UD, SPx, SPA, BD, HP, even a few Sweet Shots.

Anyway, what a thrill. I took the cards to school today, and the kids were ecstatic. Not only for the cards themselves, but for the goodwill involved. We had a great class discussion about how people in the world are generally kind and giving, and how we have to remind ourselves of that sometimes, in what has become a rather cynical culture. They are so grateful.

Each of the kids got a big handful of cards already, and all went home with smiles. I think everyone was able to get a card of their favorite player. I was even able to find a few Nick Schultz cards in the bunch, as he is always a hometown favorite, of course.

So, a big thanks to Ryan for his generosity. It FAR exceeded what I was expecting, and I know the kids in my class and I appreciate it greatly. I'll be giving cards out left and right until the end of school! There is even enough there for next year's class, too.

Thanks, JacktheRipper!!!

Great to see such generosity from Ryan. We teachers need all the support we can get. ;)

What a great way to spread "pay it forward".

I told Travis they came with one condition: more Sabres fans! :)

Glad to help out in whatever way I can and if it gets more kids into the hobby, even better.

Just a quick update...I have given away about two-thirds of the cards already. A few parents have thanked me for getting their sons and daughters interested in something other than video games. Several of the kids have also been buying blasters, trading with each other to get their favourite players and teams, etc. A few have even started making their own cards, so they are doing artwork and research (finding stats), as well as reading and writing - all good stuff.

Every day when we did math, the kids would ask, "Is this question worth a card?", because sometimes I would give out cards to the kids that got certain problems correct. It was a terrific motivator, and just added a little fun to the process.

There was no concern over value, either. The Crosby and Ovechkin cards were no more important than the fourth liners for their favourite teams. It kind of takes me back to a simpler time. It was great to see.

So again, thanks Ryan. From all of us.
