Am I crazy or in order to increase my odds of getting a good BGS grade and avoid a bad surface grade, should I be opening packs with gloves? Or am I crazy?

Crazy.

But then you send paper to a company that grades that paper.

Use gloves and take your collecting to a new level.

Here's an idea - wash you hands first.

They ones that's always bothered me is ripping the packs open at the middle seam (rather than using scissors and sliding the cards out. You're much more likely to cause noticable damage the card by ripping than anything your fingers leave on the surface.

I actually ALWAYS wash my hands before opening packs since a don't want fingermarks on my cards...

Nothing a microfiber cloth can't fix.

I would actually be concerned about swirls/scratches the cloth would make on the glossy surface of the card. I spend more time looking for surface scratches when I buy singles than I do actually checking out the corners, edges, etc. I particularly hate scratches that you can tell were the result of rough handling, improper storage (no "pack to sleeve" ttreatment) etc. I also handwash before opening.

I think it depends how you "seam rip". I kind of pinch and pull apart for the first centimetre or two, then I kind of "filet" the wrapper and pull the flaps in opposite directions while the pack remains flat. I can see your concern where you would in fact be tightening the foil/wax against the edges of the cards and possibly causing some imperfections to be exacerbated. My method I'm trying to pull away from the card edges, rather than toward them.

If any non-card collectors are reading this, such as our spouses, they'll think the whole lot of us are a bunch of obsessive compulsive maniacs!

Not a texured microfiber, but rather one that you would get with a pair of glasses. It's pretty much standard operating procedure with the Bowman Chrome submitters of the world.
