Hey guys,

Need some advice on what to do here. Today I bought roughly 40 UD S1 and S2 retros from a seller on Ebay. All were BIN's for $1.00- $1.50, my total came out to around $55 bucks. I get the invoice for shipping and he wants to charge $23.00 to ship the cards regular post, no tracking or insurance. I politely respond requesting an updated shipping amount and he replies by saying that he charges 50 cents for each additional card and doesnt cap his shipping. He also explains that Ebay charges 11% commission on his sales so this is why he doesnt cap shipping. I think its against Ebay rules to use shipping to recoup fees.... no?

I responded by saying that I have shipped larger lots than this, Xpresspost, for less than $15 dollars. Im not trying to exploit him or pull anything funny, simply trying to get the cards for a reasonable shipping charge.

Thoughts? Should I ask him to cancel the purchases? I realize the auction states 50 cents for each additional card, but am I wrong to expect the seller not to charge $100.00 shipping if I bought 200 cards for example?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I would have cleared that up with him in advance. His shipping charges may be excessive, but it's also apparently clearly stated.

I'm dealing with a guy right now who bought a card from me that I placed mandatory registered and insured shipping on and he's emailed me twice to ask if he could just pay $3 for regular shipping. Why not ask in advance and save everyone the headache?

That is a tough one but I think the seller should be willing to give you a break a such a large purchase. Shipping costs are now part of ebays fees though. But I would go with he should give you a break to move that many cards in one shot.

Have you asked if he is shipping all of them top loaded? It would be cheaper for both of you if he ships them in a 100 count snap case. I know in the past, I have had the same issue but resolved it by asking the seller to ship in this manner...

As for rules on eBay, I think they are really trying to clamp down on the exorbitant shipping costs. $23 sounds a bit high to me especially given Express Post is cheaper by comparison.

I always ask the seller about their shipping estimates before I go ahead with a sale.
Try sending him an email about the various methods of shipping and see if he budges. In my opinion, he should not be gauging you because he wants to recoup the fees. He should list his cards at a higher price otherwise.

Try doing that first before you cancel the transaction. I have found that 9 times out of 10 you will end up with an amicable decision.

Man I run into this problem too often, excessive shipping. Plus 1 to the people saying you should of asked him about that first, but I'm sure you didn't really think about him charging that much when you bought them. The seller should give you a break, if not, give him a neutral he would deserve that. If it costs $5 to mail something, thats all you should be paying.

Excssive shipping fees are against eBay policy as well as using inflated shipping charges to recoup fees. I'd run that by him, and later on eBay.

sellers ID is rickydoubleyou for anyone who wants to avoid this clown. He messaged back and basically said that it is my fault for not reading his auctions (which I agree is partially true) but that he was not going to change the shipping charge. I responded by telling him that Ill check the packaging and if the shipping charge is nowhere close to $23.00 that is going to be very unfortunate getting 41 Neutral and or Negative feedbacks over his scamming $15 on shipping.

Thats the way to go about it! Fair is fair

You just provided him everything he needs to get every one of those negatives/neutral removed if you leave them with that response. Sometimes the less you say the better off you are.

I think you are forgetting the fact that he flat out told me he is charging that much shipping to make up for his Ebay seller fees, which is against Ebay policy.

Really doesn't matter, he might get a policy violation but he's still got every opportunity to have any feedback left removed due to feedback extortion. One does not affect the other.

Oh well - if I get hammered... so what.

As I understand it you made a commitment to purchase 41 auction items from a seller that stated in his auctions (correct??) that each additional item after the first is an additional $.50.

And when you get the invoice - now you are upset???

First off - to all of you claiming that excessive shipping is against Ebay rules.... It is shipping and handling. So let's see, an extra penny sleeve (not a penny anymore!), an extra toploader (I am paying about $.12) and then after the 2nd ounce (mailing weight) I am paying $.17 per ounce domestic (not sure of the foreign). Right there I have an extra $.41 for that additional card.

Why is that outrageous???

Am I supposed to eat all of the extra packaging costs???

The biggest point is that you are BIT***NG after you made the purchase - and you want to neg the seller.

Sure the seller could save expenses by sending in a protected snap case or other means - but until you know that - you can't complain. You consumated a legal transaction, and now you want to change the deal...... Go try that next time you buy a car!

Gotta agree with Bruce on this one. It sucks, but the terms are clearly laid out, and $0.50 per card is not excessive, as it's kind of the norm. The worst that you could do is nail him on his DSR's for excessive shipping costs, depending on how he ships.

He also explains that Ebay charges 11% commission on his sales so this is why he doesnt cap shipping. I think its against Ebay rules to use shipping to recoup fees.... no?

The seller is protected by his auction description. If he does not state that there is a max shipping price (like some sellers do) it is assumed that there is no cap.

However, the seller has made an error stating that there is no cap BECAUSE of ebay fees. That one email alone (provided it went through the ebay message system) is grounds for a strike against the seller. Had he not made that mention, your only course would be to open a case about overcharge of shipping.

Work with the seller first, even send him links to the ebay policy if need be. If he won't budge (or cancel the transactions) report it to Safe Harbor.

I've got to agree. All could have been avoided if you would have simply communicated with the seller BEFORE bidding.

He stated his prices. You should have confirmed the price beforehand.

Never assume.

Agree with Bruce as well. The Seller has not done anything wrong. You may not like the shipping charges, but they were cleary stated.

Just don't pay for the items, it's not that difficult. You're not going to get banned from ebay for not paying for one transaction with a seller. I agree it's a contract, but no one is going to take someone to court for $50 no matter where you live.

I've heard of people getting paypal to refund the actual shipping price with proof of the shipping cost, but I'm not sure if that's true or just a myth.

thats one problem i have too selling cards on ebay , no one ever reads the description and payment instructions until after there ready to pay then they wanna pay what they think it costs not what the seller has outlined . my main problem is shipping from canada tracked shipping to usa is like 15.00-16.00 and international tracked shipping is estimate 19.00-22.00 yes its expensive but thats canada for you , i hear all the cool prices on shipping usa has flat rate shipping and cheap tracked shipping ,but not here its alot more for shipping and canada post always seems to mess something up with packages going missing lol
