Not gonna lie...outside of a few premium pickups, my beloved Larry Murphy collection has been a dud this year. I've still got my eye on stuff and pick away when I can, but it's been slow, REAL slow. So needless to say, I've been bored. I'm part of a hockey autograph collectors group on Facebook, and on a whim, I decided to revive an old collection and see if I could find any upgrades within the group. I'm a Hab fan (which has been harder in some years than others and really has nothing to do with my Murphy collection) and some years ago, I put together a collection of a signed rookie card of each of the members of Montreal's last Cup-winning team in 92/93. But some were bubbly or smudged, others were in pen and harder to see than marker, and others contained a greeting or personalization to someone else. In short, I thought I could do better. So I took it to the group, a collector answered my call, and we struck a small deal for 5.

That's a story for another day though. This collector, seemingly inspired by our deal, dug out his other Habs traders to see what he could market to the group. He took some photos of binder pages and showed them to me first. He had signed cards from a lot of Habs of the '80s and '90s, both prominent and not so much. It was a real blast from the past seeing these draftees of the '90s who only had a cup of coffee, but the one that caught my eye was a guy who never even got a sip.

In 1991, it's fair to say that 11 year-old me was pretty naive about the inner workings of the game. I happily drank the Habs Kool-Aid and assumed whoever they selected at the draft table was the best player they possibly could've drafted and was sure to move the needle because hey, it was the Habs (Reading prospect message boards today, I have since come to learn that I'm not alone and not much has changed over the years) In 1991, that player was Brent Bilodeau. Now, mind you, I never saw the guy play. I just saw his stats and the occasional profile in hockey almanacs. As his offensive game evolved in junior, I was certain that coupled with his impressive size, he would morph into an imposing force at both ends of the ice. Working from a WHL hockey card of his, I sketched a picture of him and swapped his junior colors out for those of the Habs in anticipation of his NHL arrival. When Super Nintendo hockey games first allowed for the Create a Player option, the first player I created was Bilodeau.

Unfortunately, those of you who know your hockey draft history might know that there was but one player from the entire first round of the 1991 draft who never got in so much as an NHL game...

Brent Bilodeau.

When a saw a lonely signed Bilodeau card in this collector's traders, the memories came flooding back and I considered getting it for old time's sake. Then I went down the rabbit hole and got to wondering, if I got this card and had to go all the way, what all did he even have for hockey cards? So to SCF I went to check their checklist. The answer there was 34 cards in total. How many of those could I find? How cheaply and quickly could I put them together? The answers to those questions are "most of them", "quite cheaply" and "within 2 weeks" (probably less if I'd been more organized and checked some sites sooner)

I bought the autograph and set out on my mission in September. Through a combination of Ebay, COMC, Sportlots, Center Ice Collectibles and Armchair Sports, I knocked almost all of them down. And to supplement them, I went back to the Facebook group to put out the call for IP autos. A few people answered the call and we made some small deals. One member even gifted me with 7 cards he'd had signed in his time working with the Fredericton Canadiens. Everyone was really nice to deal with, but all had the same question: "Why Bilodeau?" Now you know.

Yesterday, I completed a trade for the last certified auto I needed, a 1991 Classic 4 Sport autograph /1000 I found in a Google image search. So barring a few issues from his later playing and coaching career, plus a UD Anniversary 1/1, unless I can scrounge up any more IP autos I need, what you see is what you get and I'm pretty much done. Here they are in all their glory.

Behold! The next big thing who never was:

(Side note: the PSA graded UD RC is currently his only graded rookie and cost more than the majority of what you just saw combined)

Thanks for the look, and if you have similar unheralded PCs we don't know about, I'd love to hear the stories behind them.

I much appreciate the story and the quick journey to reel these in.

As for the show, I always likes me some Johnstown Chiefs

A hearty congrats.

Very cool collection! Fun seeing stuff like this. Doesn’t always need to be a big name to make for a meaningful collection! Nice work, Joe! Good luck with the UD 1/1!

My favorite is the 2003-04 Johnstown Chiefs card with Arturs Irbe behind him in net. Can't mistake that Sher-Wood stick and tape style with anyone else.

This was a great trip down memory lane for me. For me, the story is more personal as I grew up in the same small town as Brent. I also knew Brent growing up & one of my good friends is also best friends with him. All I can say is growing up, the annual track and field for elementary and junior high was impossible whenever you were going against him. Whenever Brent went into events like shot put, discus throw or even Javalin, it was not even a contest. The guy always won 1st because for one, he was a giant that was a foot taller than everyone and probably 50lbs heavier as well. I remember playing against his junior high team in basketball & the results weren't any better..lol. It's been awhile since I've seen Brent but I have run into some of his family over the years.

Anyways, great story and congrats on the collection!

I always associate Bilodeau with Lindsay Vallis, another big Seattle Thunderbird that flopped for the Habs. Both went top 17 and they have 1 NHL game between the two of them! Neither was even an AHL star. Dark times for my Habs!

Great pickups for a player and coach that is a really good person. Brent has been my sons hockey coach for the last three years and he will definitely get a kick out of this post when I show it to him. I could swear you are missing one card from the Tri-City Americans team set he was in when he was the Assistance coach I will have to take a look and see if I have one.

Thanks, were they the inspiration for the Chiefs of Slapshot fame? Is that how it went?

Thanks Eric, yeah, that will be the toughest one for sure.

what a great story, I feel like the collection won't be complete until you have IP auto of each card though

You're very right, Josh. IP autos are the backbone of my Murphy collection, but it actually seems achievable with Bilodeau. I'm told he signs TTM but for now I'm just trying to land whatever IP stuff of his is already floating around out there. It's fun to make small trades like in my younger days and connect with others in the hobby.

Great stuff, Joe. Thanks for the show and story!

Thanks CJ :)

Awesome. Must be a great feeling completing a pc!

Not quite complete. For anyone curious, the SCF checklist lists these 4 that I don't have:

2003-04 Johnstown Chiefs RBI Sports*#209 Brent Bilodeau
2004-05 Johnstown Chiefs*#1 Brent Bilodeau
2010-11 Tri-City Americans*#5 Brent Bilodeau
2019-20 Upper Deck 30th Anniversary 1991-92*#694 Brent Bilodeau 1/1

Who knows if the buyback will ever show up. The others should be achievable, but I don't know how obscure those Chiefs cards are. I figure I got all the low-hanging fruit now and am as close to complete as I'll be for a while, but you never know. I've acquired a few coaching cards that weren't on the checklist so there may be others not accounted for.

No way...I didn't know Archie played with them...

Thanks for the story, it's neat to read of your personal connection. I never really thought about it, but yeah, if he was that big when he was drafted, he could've had an early growth spurt that caused nightmares for his peers :)

Yeah, the WHL was not kind to the Habs for a number of years, was it?

Cool story and neat pick-ups. And OMG some of those early 90's sets are so cringy!

You mean tuxedoes on ice are cringy? :p Yeah, even in concept, I have no idea how that was supposed to work.

Very nice side PC. I love how it came seemingly out of nowhere and you went all out with it, IP autos and all. Well done! Digging the Team Issued cards. :D

Thanks Aaron. Since it basically started with an IP auto (though I did already have a couple of his singles from years ago) I figured that was a sign :)

Thanks for sharing Joe - great post!

Thanks Jim

You've got mail :)

Thanks everyone for the looks and comments so far, I'm glad you enjoyed my little diversion.

No way...I didn't know Archie played with them...

Archie played with them in 2003-04 because after a terrible 2002-03, the Canes wanted to move him but he had a no-trade clause. They wanted to assign him to the AHL, however, they had a surplus of goalies in the A, so down he went to the ECHL. He got recalled near the end of the season and played a decent 10 games with the Canes down the stretch.

Really cool show. Probably most of us can relate... some prospect or minor player for our team, that we were convinced would turn into a star (I still have a surplus of Mats Lindgren).

Nice that you were able to add so many so quick. Really dig team issued stuff (Chiefs!). I like the IP autos too - adding more of those seems to me like the best thing to do!

Hey Joe.

It looks like you need this IP auto for your awesome collection.

I got it signed when the Freddy Canadiens were visiting our PEI Senators (when I lived there) almost 30 years ago.

Let me know and I will send it to you,

Pete

Great show and tell, Joe! Amazing how it all came together so quickly. I would have expected a bigger challenge for a more obscure player (with all due respect!).

Thanks again to everyone who humored me and my enthusiasm for my little side project. What have I done with it since then? Well you saw a few posts up what Theideafactory Pete gifted me with, and since I had knocked so many of the cards down, I wasn't expecting many in my immediate future. There was one tough later card that I wasn't expecting to find soon or easily, but wouldn't you know it, centericecollectibles listed a set as singles in between that time, so I quickly snapped it up:

03/04 Johnstown Chiefs RBI Sports #209 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

A Google image search for another Johnstown card led me down a rabbit hole, and I came across someone who had a copy, signed no less. I contacted the person on Facebook, and the card ended up being part of a signed team set he didn't want to break up. But Bilodeau was an acquaintance of his from his time in Johnstown, and he had a number of signed cards and photos of him. I made a deal with him for 11 cards - 10 signed. Most are condition upgrades of autographs I already had:

I also acquired this error card:

91/92 Ultimate Draft #86 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

The back says Jason Dawe but that is quite clearly Bilodeau.

And these are the autographs that are new to my collection:

I thought this collector only had a handful of cards at most so the number of these was an unexpected surprise. Not very likely that I'll find that many Brent Bilodeau autographs in one place (that isn't Bilodeau's house) again anytime soon, so I paid up to get them. Guess you never know though. I'll keep an eye out. Our own Amsfan has confirmed the existence of a few Tri-City coaching cards so maybe those will be the next goal. The list of needs is REALLY getting short now outside of these bonus signed copies.

Thanks for looking;
Joe
