Alex Ovechkin Scores to Set New NHL Record for 30-Goal Seasons

With his goal against the Detroit Red Wings, Alex Ovechkin has an NHL record with his 18th career 30-goal season. He surpassed the mark set by Mike Garner, who played for five NHL teams in his career, including the Washington Capitals.

Ovechkin’s goal also gets him closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. The Great One’s mark of 894 has stood for nearly three decades and was considered unbreakable. However, the Washington captain has become a serious threat to dethrone Gretzky. Going into the game, Ovechkin has 851 career goals, just 43 behind Gretzky.

He's going to break it even if they have to push him out there in a wheelchair and bounce a rebound off his tire when he's 85 years old.

The hot take is if Auston Matthews can break his record... He'll have to get lucky and stay healthy for as long as Ovy, but through his first 558 games, Matthews has 365 goals... Ovy had 339 in his first 553.

Heck at this rate... Matthews might break the record before Ovy does. lol

It's absolutely unreal that Gretzky's record is going to be broken, especially considering he had a season with 92 and another with 87. Ovechkin has had elite skill AND elite consistency/longevity, which is something you can only say about a few guys (Howe, Lidstrom, Bourque, and Brodeur come to mind for me)

And Matthews has the kind of shot that will allow him to score well into his late 30's. We're very fortunate to be witnessing such great goal scoring talent.

So true, he could have had a shot at 1,000 goals had those things not happened.

I can't see AM34 being able to stay healthy for as long as Ovi has.
