Hi guys,
I'm putting together a website driven by trading card collectors. The goal of this site is to catalog the different numbered version of patch cards. This will ultimately be to dissuade forgeries and to be able to see all the patch cards of a given player/set in one place.

I would like to know everyone's opinion on this service (free of course) and if you think there is a need for it.

Thanks.

I think this could be a very good idea but the problem is as stated above is that there are so many different patch cards made.

I feel it would be best to focus on 2-4 different sets Like The Cup RPA's /99, /249 and Premier RPA's /299, and /199.

Just my opinion though!

Indeed this would be focused only on the more prominent ones. High end rookies mostly.

Would you be sole contributor to the site or will you accept submissions from other collectors? And if so, how would you vet those submissions?

Someone did that on here for Crosby/Ovie RC’s that had patches, mainly for The CUP. It worked out pretty well and caught a few “kenny” style fakes. Of the /99’s posted, I think the database included something like 92/99 for Crosby, about 74/99 for Ovie.

Good luck with the task. Try to get a wide range of players as we all know that some stars grow into the role and their older cards do end up being manipulated later.

A large-scale project like this would only work financially if you charged for the service and rewarded contributors. Its actually a great idea but to take it from just a random flickr account versus a e-pack level website will take a serious investment.

How widespread is the fake patch plague?

How could anyone but the manufacturer certify any legitimacy?

If it were me, I'd want to focus on what can be proven - which patches are understood to be fake.

There are definitely some people on here that can help to verify patches. Jeremy, MWDONALD, and myself being a few of them.

This has been suggested numerous times and the conclusion eventually reached was that it would simply be too massive of an undertaking and too expensive. One year someone went to UD and photographed all the Cup ARP's to post in a database as they were being packed out and I'm not sure that ever got completed. It's a great idea but simply not feasible.

It would be far easier to get UD to tamper proof the patches and jerseys like Panini. If you hold a Panini jersey or patch card in front of a bright light you can see text usually the players name the jersey color and some numbers that id the jersey they used I'm guessing.

Thank you to everyone who has answered the poll and left comments.

The project is 100% going to happen. The framework for the site is currently being worked on.

For all of those who would like to contribute (non financial), please send me a private message and i'll give you guys some more info.

Thank you all again!
