Penguins lock up Fleury with four-year, $23 million extension

I love the deal. He is a popular player in this area and I never really understood why people always blame him for the playoff failures. This is a team sport. He definitely was not the reason we lost last year. He did his job and did it well. Congrats MAF

Hmmmm. Let's see....

If I say it's an overpayment and not a good signing and that he's one of the main reasons the Pens have seen early exits, I will sound like/be accused of being a 'hater.'

If I say it's a steal of a deal, and that MAF is one of the top 5 goalies in the NHL who is a proven winner and this will help the Penguins for years to come, I will sound sarcastic.

No win situation for me, so I'll just go with 'Good for MAF.'

I think its fine for both parties .......the goalie market is thin anyone just as good or better is already locked up elsewhere .......

Every goalie has tough stretches, even the ones who were deemed the greatest ever. I think MAF is a very good goalie, he has struggled at times, but I truly believe much of that can be attributed to the 6 guys the Pens rolled out as the d-men in front of him.

Do I think it's an overpayment? Nope, he actually makes less then Corey Crawford, which is stunning to me. You want to see an overpayment, look no further then the goalie in Chicago who is making $6 million.

As a Pens fan, I am satisfied and ok with the signing terms/$. When I look at the available goalies, I just don't see much of an upgrade out there. Maybe I am a bit biased being a Pens fan and Fleury supporter, but I still am ok with ownership having faith in him.

Its not always the goaltending in the playoffs that bomb them, its a combination of all.

I'm not a Fleury fan but this is a good and reasonable deal for both sides. There's nobody better on the market, or likely to be on the market, and to lock him up at a medium-term deal for under $6M per season is pretty solid. So, kudos to all involved.

Great signing for the Pens. Like others have said, if you let Fleury walk, who is going to play goal for you? There is no one better than Fleury who is/will be available. He is clearly a #1 and most teams would be happy to have him.

Relatively short term, fair price, and the cap's going up. Good signing I'd say. Worst case, in a couple years he could still be traded somewhere as his cap hit isn't abysmal.

Totally reasonable. He's played well of late too. Not an overpayment and not a crazy long contract. Win-win for both parties.

Plus nobody out there to replace him, so it's a huge risk to let him walk and take a chance on a UFA goalie. Even trying to trade for a proven #1 would be next to impossible.

I too think this is an alright deal. It gives Pittsburgh some stability in the short term. However, it is not an albatross of a deal.

It's the going price for a #1 goalie. Bishop, Schneider, Crawford are all comparables so I wouldn't loose any sleep over the terms/$$. The deal also contains a NMC and a modified NTC.

I don't think the early playoff exits are directly related to goaltending issues anyways. He's played well for Pitt and team Canada over the years. Every goalie has their off days. That's just the nature of the beast.

Good regular season goalie, abysmal playoff goalie. However, as mentioned, there is nothing out there to replace him with, so Pittsburgh is stuck with him, until they can develop from within. If they want to win a Cup, hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.

Financially it's not too bad of a deal.

It's fine - fair and reasonable on both sides I would say.

$6mil for a solid goalie is probably under the going rate or what he would have gotten on the open market (not by a ton, but still cheaper) and four years is certainly not an eternity.

Should it go south on them this is a contract that they will be able to unload a year or two down the road. MAF is't a top five goalie but he is solid - say what you will about a couple slips in the playoffs but he's also had some pretty big moments. Throw a couple thumpers on that blueline and they could really be set.

.891, .899, .834, .883, .915

MAF's save percentage in the playoffs the last 5 years. That's not a "couple slips", that is sheer mediocrity...LOL...we're talking ECHL caliber goaltending. Even the year he won the Cup, it was only .908. That SV% would be enough to have a netminder on almost any other team looking for a job, or riding the pines in the minors.
