I started saving images of each copy that popped up before I thought I'd ever pony up and get one for myself. Kept up with it after I did, and came across something interesting this morning.

Original scan I had:

031.jpg

And one I discovered today:

031FAKEDeverestsummit2011oneBay.jpg

eBay listing: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2005-06-UD-C...t=US_Hockey_Trading_Cards&hash=item3f177fcf70

With the first scan not being great I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but both look numbered 031/199 to me. Just wanted to bring it to people's attention.

Well that answers my question! I was going to go bid on the other one he owned. The one will the Statue of Liberty "crown." Good thing.

Thanks!

Nice catch! For anyone not aware this everestsummit2011 seller is the same guy behind the previous ebay IDs: kilga and cupisbest. Both of these IDs have been known to sell many repatched Cup RCs. I would be extremely careful when buying Cup RCs from any of these IDs. Not all the Cup RCs listed under these IDs are repatched, for example I'm sure the 3 Kopitar Cup RCs that everestsummit2011 has listed now are legit (based on previous scans showing the same patch), but this Boedker is definitely repatched. Under normal circumstances this card would have sold long ago for this price but I think buyers are realizing the danger in buyer cards from these sellers and they aren't going near any of his nice Cup RCs anymore. One can only hope! Threads like this really help to get the word out. Keep them coming!

I wouldn't suggest this person is a patch faker and that they more than likely picked them up unknowingly. I have done numerous deals with this seller at expo in the past and some of them were extremely large. He used to always but the nicest pieces he could find. I know he had some issues in the past but I don't believe patch faking was one of them.

if you have ever checked his auctions in the past, they are always amazing patches at half of book value. and he says that he doesnt get cards that he wins in auctions even though he did.

Darn, its always disappointing when i see a reported fake cup card. I would love to purchase a few cup cards myself but I literally have no clue how to spot a fake so i often just set my cup desires aside.

Other than scan comparisons are there any ways to tell of a fake cup patch?

It is truly at the point where, if it looks too good to be true then it probably is. Its a damn shame what some people have done to these cards. Future Watch hard signed rookies are the way to go. I don't know too many people who pay a premium for the nice looking patches now adays because of all this.

My bets are that Kenny and kilga know each other and are in this business together. I remember hearing about kilga in the past and I don't think he fakes any cards, but he just sells them I believe.

At this rate, people are going to stick to buying mono-coloured patches. I wish more is done against those whose do the patch-faking.

i am actually surprised that nothing was done about all this patch faking business when it was at the forefront. There were several threads about it as I am sure we all remember, but the only punishment I think that happened to the infamous Kenny was him getting banned from a couple of card shows.
