Potential new competitor to eBay?

advertising = more traffic = more hits on your auctions

i think in economics they call that shielding or something, for example it is pretty much impossible for another computer company to join the market and compete with microsoft, or very difficult for a new fast food chain to compete with mcdonald's, burger king etc.

ebay has the sole monopoly on the market and nothing can change that (unless they close down of course)

was just looking at the site, and their us / can exchange rate is way out of wack! gonna keep us canadians away for sure

10 days live...and they now have 2 hockey cards listed. Had some hope for the site, but it's dwindling fast.

Doesn't surprise me. Now that I think about it, if eBay was able to squash something established like Yahoo Auctions, why would a new site be able to make waves?

It will take something like a Google to throw their hat in the ring, or (gasp) Microsoft. I realize Yahoo is a big company, but I never recall seeing them advertising the auction site.

I've been an eBay member since Sept 1997, and it's become a part of our culture. The word "eBay" is a verb (much like Google, obviously) and it really is the world's marketplace. Sports cards are probably such a small percentage of all the eBay auctions overall, that in theory a niche competitor could move in. But it's the other stuff that makes it convenient. 3-ring binders, check. Original Disney production cels, check. Authentic Eames chairs, check. Ninja III: The Domination on vhs, check. Back issues of TV Guide, check. A 1997 Landrover Defender, red, check. Check, check, check.

You simply can't beat the convenience. We see eBay ads on television and in magazines. Even my mom, who is so computer-phobic, has an eBay account.

-> So Chris, I vaguely recall you moving to Texas for a SQL Dev job, right? I know MySQL pretty well, and have been doing web design since about 1996. Maybe it's time we all band together and create HI Auctions!

I'm not sure I can trust an auction site that thinks "without" is 2 words :D

That being said, I kind of like the clean layout of the site, but that's about it. I just don't see how this differs from Naxcom, or sportlots in terms of what it brings to the table.

And now they're shut down... nice try boys.

Our site did a great job of bringing sellers over from the corporate monster. However, we could not bring enough buyers in to match the traffic that items get on eBay. This was no surprise but we gave it the ol' college try and are sad to say that it will not be working out.......for the time being. We are closing down and hope to relaunch around Christmas of this year(2008) with a revamped site and massive amounts of shameless promotion at card shows and magazines. One day there will be a viable alternative to eBay that can bring in the traffic necessary to sustain our hobby but for now it will not be us. Please do not forget about us and tell your friends that we will be coming back. For now though, it's time to say goodbye for a while.

*We will be closing this Saturday, April 26th. Any items not paid for or still listed will be deleted. All of our user's private information including addresses and credit card numbers will be permanently deleted from our databases with the exception of the email addresses from users who opted in to promotional email messages. Credit cards will not be charged for any services rendered by Cardboard Exchange in it's brief time of business so you will not see any charges from us regardless of your activity on the site. Have a good summer and keep an eye out for us in the future!

Yep, I got the same email. At least they went out gracefully. I have to admit that, though I registered with them, I had to go to the site to remember what it even was.
