I'm not surprised it's come to this. Topps is making a killing on Star Wars Digital Card Trading, where there is ZERO physical component. There's not even "foiling up to get 6 or 10 cards" - People have spent thousands of dollars on that to build up the best collection of pictures ever.
It's all in your mentality/rationale though. We're not the target demographic here as lifelong physical/tangible card collectors.
I went through a Reddit thread about SWCT to try and understand peoples' point of view and it was really interesting. Some people don't care about the physical aspect of collecting because they don't want the cards cluttering and taking up space. Some others think that it's a hassle to collect physical cards because of where they live. Others like the immediate nature without running out to an LCS or waiting for eBay to deliver them something.
I "collect" SWCT digital app but don't put any physical money into it since they're just pictures to me. My 2 year old daughter likes flipping through them and seeing her favorite characters so it's good enough reason for me to spend 30 minutes a week screwing around with it.
You can put anything for sale and there will be a market for it I guess.
