PSA 9s vs PSA 10s

Just wondering what HI members think about the following question:

Would you rather pay 3-4 times less for a PSA 9 rookie card or spend the bigger bucks to acquire a PSA 10?? Not sure if I'd rather own 4 psa 9s of my favourite rookie in the hopes the 9s go up in value more relative to the one psa 10 I could purchase for the same price.

Beniers YGs for example: PSA 10 about $450 and you can generally pick up a PSA 9 copy for about $120-$140.

I'm a card guy first and foremost.

If I can get the card cheaper, then I'll get it cheaper.

I’ll take 9’s at significantly less cost. If I can acquire a 10 for a decent price I’ll do that but not at the crazy jump there currently is.

I would never pay a 4-5x premium for a PSA 10 over 9, when you can't even visually tell the difference.

I think it depends on what you're buying it for, right?

A PC card might be fine as a PSA 9 (or any other grading company). Collectors mostly want to, first-and-foremost, own the card and want their money to go a long way.

A more liquid, investment-type card should likely be a PSA 10. That's why the market pays a 3x-4x premium on them.

You can come up with all kinds of rationales to go either way, though. It's the beauty of collecting (and opinions). If you're going to use the numbers/market to help your decision, be careful with your math...

I agree with your last statement! Not many dealers willing to part with their PSA 10s for lesser cards!!

People over on the baseball side refer to 9s as "fine 9s". Ain't nothin' wrong with a 9. I prefer 10 but will take a 9 if I can't afford/won't buy a 10.
