I got my first altered and miscut cards coming back from PSA. First off, what do these 2 things mean? And am I out of luck in getting these 2 cards graded and slabbed?

Miscut or altered usually means they were trimmed to take off a bad edge or make the corner sharper. There could be other reasons but those are most common.
If PSA didn’t grade them doubtful any reputable grading company will.

So basically you are saying I’m screwed from getting these graded? I bought them raw off of eBay.

You could resubmit and indicate you don’t mind have MC on the PSA label. They usually grade it and say it’s MC (miscut)

I've had at least one card come back from Beckett as "altered" when I know it wasn't. It was a young guns that I pulled from a pack personally.

I think with a vintage card, an altered card is more obvious though.

Sounds like they're being overly cautious after the latest allegations. There are standard deviations from for card sizes (put them in a box and see that the stack of cards aren't exactly flush), and while PSA/BGS never measured cards (from what I understand), it must have been well beyond that deviation that they just assumed it was trimmed.

Honestly, it was a very odd submission. Sent in about 70 cards. So many got the exact same grade. A few cards also got dinged to 9 or 8 on centering, despite being years with borders, where you could see if they were off centre.

This was about 1.5 years ago, right as things were getting crazy at Beckett. I wonder if my order didn't end up either getting rushed or graded by someone with less experience.

Anyways, I've resubmitted the questionably graded cards to PSA with my last order....so we'll see.

What is the difference between miscut and altered?

Miscut means the factory didn't cut the card properly. Fire example, cards where the centering is so bad you sometimes see bits of other cards.

Altered means someone altered the card after it came out of the factory. For example trimming the cards to remove dinged corners.
