Thought this could be a fun topic, and if you like the cards, it's not really bad at all. :)

Nonetheless, here are my top blunders in buying cards:
-paid $275 for 1998 Paramount Ice Blues of Kariya and Fedorov (yikes)
-paid $125 for a 1998 UD GJ of Belfour when it booked at $250, now BV30

Heh, can't win 'em all. If I remember any more, I'll be sure to add them.

Thanks for reading :)

2000-2001 Martin Havlat SPX Spectrum x/50

This card when released was nuts, the regular version xx/1500 were selling for over $100.00. The Spectrums that showed up were going over $300.00, I snagged one for $295.00 I believe. Beckett has is booking at $30.00 today.

I get lots of people wanting this card, but not for $30.00BV - This is a tough card to find and undervalued in my opinion.

Cool thread Wes! :)
Mine would be a Mike Johnson 98/99 Upper Deck Exclusives /100 for $20. I don't even know what it book for now. I guess it's not that bad really though. And, belive it or not, it's the most I've ever spent on a single card. Although, if I cough up enough for a Stajan SPA I will go over that. :p

Nothing too drastic for me, but here's a couple:

00-01 Vanguard Cechmanek RC for almost $15.00... Books at $8.00 now and could probably be picked up for a dollar.

99-00 Upper Deck Samsonov 2-color Jersey for $61.00... Books at $25.00 now and a 2-color would still sell decently, but certainly not for that much. That's the most I've ever spent on one card, and I saved up for it and bought it shortly after the product came out. I could see dropping $20 on it, even now, but if I only would have waited on it another year or two...

Thankfully, my number of good buys far outweighs my bad purchases.

EDIT: Wes, take it from me, for a player collector, the Johnson pickup is nothing to be ashamed of. 98-99 Exclusives are getting REALLY hard to find, as I can attest to - still two I'm trying to find and have been for a while. And I think that with an older, rare-ish set like that, you'll have the whole "commons are worth more" phenomenon thing going on too.

How about I just give you the most recent one?

The 11 boxes of Parkie Rookie I opened at $300/box when the stuff first went live.

I would have to say when I forked out $100 for a 99-00 Yzerman game jersey. I think they book at $50 now and can probably be had in the $20's or $30's...

I don't know if it's so much remorse as being upset that it didn't pan out..a 98-99 SPx Top Prospects Tim Connoly RC /1999. Got it for like $30 bucks or something when it booked $50, now it books as a common. Meh.

I have almost all of Pavel Bure's Canucks cards that I paid handsomely for in the mid to late ninetys. Now that I've added them to the "my collection" section of Beckett.com I realized that 479 unique cards that cost me thousands of dollars have an unrealistic high book value of about $1,200 right now, with no hope of ever going up again. Not to mention, after his glory days in Vancouver, he turned into a douche!

I'm upset that Connolly didn't pan out, either. The Isles definitely ripped off the Sabres on that trade (Mike Peca for Taylor Pyatt and Tim Connolly).

When I collected Jagr - $250.00 for PSA 10 OPC rookie. OUCH! If I did not have so much in it, I'd take it outside and shoot it with a BB gun like I did his bobblehead.

More of a regret on stuff I didn't pick up - 96-97 and 97-98 You Crash the Game redemption sets. after the 94-95 and 95-96 sets ended up not being worth anything I think most people did as I did and didn't bother to send them in...now you might see occasionally see one at a crazy  high price....

umm boxes would be my case of ud legends basketball 12 boxes and only a few nice autos and no dual ouch.
for card I would say my retro mini set. I took me 2 1/2 boxes and $300 or so. Allthough it is a cool set I am now looking to sell it and will probably only get $200 or so.

how about 115 on a 02-03 UD Piece of History box....even if i had the best box of my life it would never have been worth that much

Nothing extremely major here, but I paid around $15 a few years back for a Black Diamond Quad that was mislabeled as $50 when in reality it booked for $5 (darn horizontal/vertical deal)...

I paid about $40 for the 00-01 SPA Ville Niemenen when it booked for $100. It may not sound that bad except I did the same thing 3 more times during the summer they last won the cup. I did still keep the one he signed for me though. People thought I was insane getting a $100 card signed at the time, now they are probably worth more signed.
