Does anyone think that Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar have long lasting value in the hobby give they are both defensemen?

Short answer: No
Erik Karlsson is the premier defenseman of the modern era of collecting and his Future Watch never came close to $300 USD. Makar and Hughes are both extremely overvalued because they’re standing out in a very weak rookie class.
If I pulled anything high end of the Hughes brothers or Makar I would sell immediately.

This is exactly my opinion.
The only thing I would add: Maker & Q. Hughes are seeing their values inflated this year, because there has not been an offensive forward take off. Kappo or J. Hughes (easy examples) might pan out to be elite forwards... but they're not that in year one.
This year's best rookie was Makar. People are paying top dollar for the best.
Defenseman have been undervalued in this hobby for decades. I don't think that's changing anytime soon.

I’ll throw you another comparison. Duncan Keith has 3 stanley cups and played in the neighbourhood of 30 min a game. I sold his young gun for just under 90 after the last cup run. It is now available for 20 or less.
I think that tells the story of d men from a collectibility standpoint.
Doesn’t mean the young guys won’t have spikes, but don’t expect long term growth.

John Carlson is another example. He's coming off a zillion point season and probably a Norris, and he's a $25 YG. Cup winner too.
I love Makar and Hughes as players but the time to sell will be around Calder announcement time. You can always rebuy when they drop below half price in the near future.

To add another example, Ekblad won the Calder for rookie of the year. Sold for ok value in that year but never huge dollars. You can now buy his Cup RC for below $300. Most D-Men are just under appreciated.
