Rask opts out of NHL's return to play

Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask will no longer take part in the ongoing Stanley Cup Playoffs, the club announced Saturday.

"I want to be with my teammates competing, but at this moment there are things more important than hockey in my life, and that is being with my family," the star netminder said in a statement.

"I want to thank the Bruins and my teammates for their support and wish them success," he added.

Wow, this could hurt. Halak is a really good option but if he goes down they would have to have unknown Vladar step up!!!

I respect him for that. There are far more important things than shinny

I respect him too, but it seems odd to wait until game 3 of the bubble event. Why even go in first place? I’m not a B’s fan but it does feel like he’s leaving them in a bind.

There's definitely more important things and I don't know his family or life situation. Just seems weird that he showed up for awhile.

I think the Bruins are covering up for his bad attitude. His presser was an embarrassment to the league and his team.

I thought the hockey was pretty intense, I definitely wouldn’t consider it shinny. I respect his decision but all seems a little suspect. Why come back and then give up on your team? If there was some family situation I would understand but seems weird. His decision and we have to respect his right to choose but maybe he should have done it at the beginning.

From what I've read, he was reluctant to go to Toronto in the first place and really wanted to be with his family. He gave it a try; it didn't work out. Fortunately, the Bruins have an excellent goaltender in Halak to fall back upon.

Who knows what he was thinking? Maybe he went in the first place because he didn't want to let the team down. But when you have three small kids, including a newborn, it couldn't have been easy to leave your family. But being physically cut off from the rest of the world for three months, it was inevitable that at least one player would experience anxiety, it's how they deal with this or cases down the line - this will be interesting. The NHL says that they care first and foremost about safety, did this include mental health as well?

It's not like Halak is an inexperienced rookie goalie. He played enough that the team knows how he operates, and also knows how to deal with playoff pressure. So I doubt the Bruins were left in the lurch - or were not surprised by his ultimate decision. No one knows what was going on within the team, by the sounds of things, they weren't shocked by the opt-out

The amount of blowback from Boston fans is not surprising, like any Boston fanbase has any semblance of rational behaviour

I totally respect his decision to leave. These playoffs are like no other with the timing so he couldn't have predicted this when he had his newborn.

Family comes first and I don't mind this decision at all. His last press conference could have been a bit more dry and clean cut before his eventual exit to smooth things a bit, but it is what it is at this point.

Who cares? Imagine if a bunch of people sat around speculating why you do things in your life and were judgemental? That probably never happens here.

I just hope he and his family are healthy and safe, he's a human being more than hockey player.
