In the 36 Semi Final Smith plays in the longest game in hockey history earning a shutout with 92 saves in 176 minutes of game time
Jimmy Franks would see one game of action in 37-38

In November Tiny Thompson comes to Detroit in a trade for Normie Smith. Smith refuses to report and retires.
Other goalies to see limited time are Harvey Teno, Claude Bourque and Alfie Moore
1941-43
Johnny Mowers signs as a free agent and is the starting goaltender until he leaves to enlist in the armed Forces during WWII
** I still need this card **

Smith is recalled on an emergency basis and appears in 5 games. A young Harry Lumley appears in 2 games
1944-50
Lumley takes over as Detroit’s #1 goalie and leads them to a Stanley Cup in his rookie season and again in 1950.
During these 6 seasons other goalies to see action are Red Almas, Mowers (returned from the war), Tom McGrattan and Dion who was traded before the 45-46 season to the AHL

After starting 7 games in 49-50 Terry Sawchuk takes over as Detroit’s goalie following Lumley’s trade to Chicago during the offseason

Glenn Hall, Dave Gatherum, Almas and Lefty Wilson see limited action behind Sawchuk during this span

Sawchuk returns in a trade with Boston with Johnny Bucyk going the other way.
Bob Perreault, Dennis Riggin, Hank Bassen, Pat Rupp, Harrison Gray, Roger Crozier and Gilles Boisvert all see limited action in relief of Sawchuk

Edwards start the majority of games as Crozier is traded to Buffalo in June. Jim Rutherford serves as backup for one year before being claimed by Pittsburgh in the Inter-League Draft
Gerry Gray and Don McLeod also see action

Al Smith (claimed from Pittsburgh), Joe Daley (acquired from Buffalo) and Andy Brown split time for one season.
Brown is best known as the last goalie to play without a mask (April 7, 1974 with Pittsburgh)
1972-73
Edwards is reacquired from Pittsburgh and starts the bulk of the games this year
Denis DeJordy (acquired from Islanders in a deal that sends Gray to New York) and Brown also see action.
