RIP Dan Wheldon

Very sad news, it eerily reminded me of Greg Moore's death in 1999.

That was something else...I met him that summer in Toronto at a convenience store on Queen St right across from MuchMusic. Such a nice guy and very approachable. When he died later that year, I was numb.

Anything can happen in that sport in a split second. Unreal.

Unreal. I watched the start of the race, listened to him talk to Scott Goodyear before the start then flipped the station after the second lap. Maybe I heard the last words he ever said.

I haven't followed racing nearly as closely as I used to in the mid-nineties but this kind of news always upsets me.

When I was younger (13) I first met Greg Moore, we had a nice chat and the amazing impression I got from him never wore off. At that point I decided I wanted to be a race car driver. I used to go karting weekly and got semi-involved with the Sports Car Club of BC at Mission raceway. I pretty much wanted to be Greg Moore. Luckily I didn't see the race when he died. I was hit so hard by his death it wasn't until 2007 that I actually mustered up the courage to view the video.

Having watched open wheel racing for many years, this is the worst crash I ever saw and knew immediately that someone would not make it out alive. Such a tragedy. They can make the cars as safe as anything but if they keep insisting on running them on tracks not suited for this type car unfortunatly this kind of tragedy will happen again. Hopefully IRL officials will wake up.

RIP Dan

I don't have words big enough to share my love for this sport and my sadness about this crash.

Dan Wheldon Memorial Auction to Benefit Late Racer's Family

Finally, an auction that serves a greater good in the wake of Dan Wheldon's tragic death.

What started as a simple comment on Twitter by fellow racer Graham Rahal has snowballed into a massive charitable event with all proceeds benefiting the Dan Wheldon Family Trust Fund. Rahal offered the helmet, gloves and shoes he used in the ill-fated Las Vegas race to raise money for the family of his fallen peer. This seemingly small gesture began an outpouring of support from celebrities and athletes around the world who also wanted to donate memorabilia.

“I certainly appreciate everyone’s support for Dan's Memorial Auction. I never thought when I tweeted about auctioning my helmet that we would get this kind of reaction,” said Rahal.

Some of the items include a Colts helmet signed by Peyton Manning, a race-worn helmet from NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, a Pippa Mann race-used firesuit from the Indianapolis 500, a hockey stick signed by the LA Kings, Danica Patrick signed die-cast model cars, a Firestone tire table signed by every participant in the 2011 Indianapolis 500 and more.

Each item will be available for bidding for ten days with more items slated to be added in the future. Fans and collectors interested in bidding on one of the dozen of items can visit the specially created auction site at www.danwheldonmemorialauction.com.

The site also has information about donating items for the auction as well as how to make a contribution directly to the fund. All proceeds will go to Wheldon's family, including funding his children's education.

Wheldon is survived by his wife, Susie, and sons Oliver, age 2, and Sebastian, 7 months.
