By what ridiculous calculation does O'Reilly win the Conn Smythe in place of Binnington??

Seems like the age old adage - he scored the most points, ergo, MVP. Just like regular season thinking. Makes no sense to me.

Because Binnington was merely average in the SCF. He played great in games 5 and 7, but was poor in games 3 and 6. His stats on the whole in the playoffs were merely average, he wasn't even in the top five in GAA or SV %.

His stat line for the SCF was even lower than the playoffs overall. His GAA was about 2.77 and SV% of .912. Those aren't anywhere near Conn Smythe numbers.

OReilly scored in four straight games to close out the finals, and led the league in scoring in the playoffs.

In fact, I would have given Rask the nod for Conn Smythe over Binnington.

Bah, don't care that much? In the big picture it's great to see a new team win it and a VERY worthy candidate take home the Conn Smythe!

GO'Reilly!

Congrats to ROR, incredible 2 way player and human being. :stanley: :blues:

ROR was by far the best player in the SCF. It took him a while to get going in the playoffs but he was deserving. Binnington had some amazing games but he also pooped the bed a few times. I think Binnington was first star of the game last night though. He was incredible.

Winning the cup with pedestrian goaltending just further proves that it’s the most overrated position in sports.

Ask the Flyers if that is the case - they've been underestimating the need for a goalie for 30 years now...

Ask the Penguins if having Fleury and Murray weren't essential to winning their Cups.

Ask the Dynasty era Oilers if they could have won without Grant Fuhr in a 7-5 game when they were up one late in the third

Adequate goaltending may get you a Cup, but if you have that goalie that can make that crucial stop when it matters most, it will likely lock it down for you.

And without Binnington in the first period last night - the Blues don't even get a sniff of winning Game 7, or for that matter most of the playoffs.

Personally I thought Parayko was probably their best player in the Final - he was pretty much unbeatable against the Bruins top line 5 on 5. But because he doesn't score as much as others, he didn't get as much consideration as O'Reilly, who was also key in winning. Regardless, the Blues don't win without the contributions from everyone on that team - I don't think there were any passengers in this series

Voting results released:

Colton Parayko (St. Louis) - 7 points (0)

That looks about right. I would have been just as happy to see Binnington get it but that is the former goalie in me speaking.

O'Reilly was deserving and was very sorry for swearing on national TV.

I agree with O'Reiily winning but to say Binnington played below average is not completely accurate. His stats may not have been great, but the game is not played on a piece of paper. He was dynamite all playoffs long at making the timely save.

16-10 W/L
.914 Save Percentage
2.46 Goals Against

I think that was the final factor.
Yes he stood on his head for 3 of the victories in this series, but he also had some stinkers throughout.

O'Reilly with 23 points including 18 at even strength is a worthwhile choice.
I'm fairly certain it was not a robbery

I don’t think you can give a goalie the Conn Smythe when they get yanked in the SCF. I would have been fine if he won it though. He is no doubt one of the main reasons they turned their season around. But to me, the OP’s underlying message was there is no clear cut winner. I think that’s one of the reasons this team won the cup. Binnington had bad games, but bounced right back with timely saves. All 4 lines contributed at different times. Their 2 OT GWGs, goals came from a defenseman and 3rd liner. I may be slightly off, but I think they had goals from 19 different players throughout the playoffs.

I also thought Binnington would get it in the moment of it all last night.

Then today I watched a highlight from the Blues website of every goal they scored this playoffs. Especially in the last few games of the SCF, O'Reilly had a such a huge in most of the goals scored either directly or indirectly. Can't really complain with the choice.

The Blues wouldn't have even made the playoffs if it wasn't for Binnington. He went on a tear.

Who knows what this means for his career, as you just never know what the future holds or how he will play, but I do not agree with this statement.
