So in the middle of a black ops game tOnight , the system shut off. After pressing the power button to to turn it back on, the dreaded red ring of death appeared

So I guess I'm getting a new xbox tomorrow. Now what I'm wondering is how do I transfer the data from my old hard drive to the new one?

you will need a transfer kit. I dont think the elite comes with one. If i remember correctly i think you need to call Xbox and they will ship you the transfer kit for free.

Or you can just use a friends XBOX. Take your hard drive, plug it in there's and copy your file onto a USB key.

Was it a red ring or an E68? If it's a red ring, you might just be able to pop your old hard drive off the dead system and slip it into the new one. That's all I had to do...Microsoft sent me a new system and I was fine to go when I put the old hard drive in the new system. The only thing is if you have any old arcade games, you may have trouble playing them because they tie the download to the machine's serial number and not necessarily your profile. When I had a hardware replacement, all my arcade games worked properly except for Braid. Eventually, it accessed my save file once...but I haven't been able to do it since.

If it was an E68, it's a hard drive connection failure...try cleaning the connectors, dusting the system and trying it again.

I'd try your HD on a buddy's system first to see if it boots up properly and allows you to continue as-is. If it works, I think you can just get away with buying one of the $129 4GB systems Best Buy and co have on sale right now.

it was the complete red ring. went to FS and bought a new 250GB, got a deal with the warranty and transfer cable. thought i could just pop the HDD into the new slims, but the original xboxb 360 and the new slims have diff size drives

oh well. at least we can get the kinect for cadence when shes a lil older now lol

Hmm...that's really helpful to know if I ever upgrade...I didn't realize they had different size HDs, and I guess if my problems escalate, I'll have to look for one of these transfer kits as well.

Sometimes when I play COD online I wish my machine would red ring. Mostly due to be getting my butt abused.

if you ever do upgrade, i'll lend you my transfer kit. retail on the cable is 29.99 + tax but this guy i go to all the time at futureshop hooked it up at like $9. so if/when u do need it, lmk, you can just borrow mine.
