RUMOR: McDonald's to stop making their hockey cards

Kinda surprised it hasn;t been cut out sooner. Great promotion for kids, but when you have the Cappo family ordering enough burgers and fries to ensure they get all the packs, well, that's just wrong!

I stopped when the inserts became too hard to get (clear paths). I was in university at the time and monies needed to go to tuition instead.

McD's was damned no matter what they did. People complained long nad hard about the chase cards being too difficult and greedy jerks buying up everything in site. They fixed it by taking the hits that people actually wanted out of the product.

Deep down they should have enforced a strict number of packs sold per customer, no matter how many drinks or fries they purchased.

When the 05-06 season was booming, I bought so much of this stuff it was insane! I wanted as many Crosby's as possible...and its still a sweet looking card!\
Then I tried again in 07-08 but it wasn't as much fun.

Now, I could really care less as the pull factor is simply not good enough to justify the expense, and potential weight gain..lol

my guess is McD's wil make a decision once the licensing situation is resolved. I'd be curious to see if McD's tried to broker with Topps or ITG, or if UD was out of the equation they'd completely back off.

I agree with plubers about keeping kids far away from McDonald's, or any other fast food chain for that matter. McDonald's, however, is an important entry product for people just getting into the hobby. It's what brought me back in 2006 and I have memories of collecting McDonald's Jays cards and NHL All-Star cards as a kid. This is probably the only product collected by fans who otherwise do not collect cards.

I think making sure your kid isn't indoctrinated at an early age to eat the crap they serve at McDonald's is way more important than getting them into collecting cards. Yet, if McDonald's cards are done, though, it's bad for the hobby.

Well said...they should continue the program, but without the big ticket inserts AND they should make it available only with Happy Meals. Too many greedy adults walking in there buying entire sleeves of packs. This year made me laugh watching how many people bought sleeves early only to find out there were no jerseys and autos in it. Suckers...

Putting them in happy meals will only deter so many.

You really want to deter adults? Do hockey stickers instead of cards. A Panini set with McD's would attract a slew of kids while most adults will stay away from it like it was a disease-ridden rat (aka the Big Mac McWrap)

I think from a sales perspective, McD's must historically see a spike during the hockey card promo. An awful lot of people buy an awful lot of big mac's etc just for the opportunity to buy packs.
By removing the "hits" this year though, I think sales were probably awful, and I would think whoever made that call could certainly have lost their job over it.
I can see McD's taking a year off if UD's exclusive with the NHL/PA is really in question, but other than that, I expect we'll all be able to cram greasey junk down our gullets for a shot at memorabilia or auto cards for a long time to come.

Would anybody be interested in McD's cards if someone like ITG did a promo around the CHL and/or graduates of the CHL? Or maybe the World Juniors?

Pacific had the McD's license for a while, it doesn't need to be UD.
