Sharks sign Hjalmarsson to offer sheet

I wonder if SJ is retaliating for something Chicago did... Setoguchi is also an unsigned RFA that is probably a target for many GMs. Maybe Chicago sent him an offer and he turned it down?

Chicago has no money do they?!?!? They are doing whatever they can do to get under the cap. Though with this they probably will be fine after they lock up Niemi.

Losing Byfuglien, Vertseeg, Ladd, Sopel and Hjalmarsson and replacing them with prospects, has-beens and retreads has got to hurt them. They are still going to be a force and one of the teams to beat but they've lost a significant amount of depth here.

*waits for some Hawks fan (cough Tony) to come and give me a run down how each player they lost can be easily replaced and in fact, the Hawks have just improved significantly.

No way Chicago sent Seto an offer... they've been doing everything they can to purge players (Buf, Versteeg, Ladd, Sopel, etc) to get under the cap AND they have to re-sign Niemi. They aren't going to go out there and offer Seto $4M+ or whatever it would take to get him. Makes no sense.

This move is simply SJ recognizing they have a hole on D, and looking at a bright young player from a cap-tight team.

pretty sure teams don't have to be under the cap until the season starts

Teams are allowed to go over the cap by 10% during the off-season. It's speculated that the reason the Kovalchuk-to-NJ signing is taking as long as it is, is because the Devils have to clear space so that they fit within those parameters. Of course, given the way this saga is unfolding, that rumoured signing may turn out to be unfounded.

Chicago has gotten off easily from the cap hell that they were in. Trading the pieces they have and getting a decent return is impressive - I thought they would have to sacrifice some youth in addition to move some of those pieces and yet they found suckers to help them out.

Also, teams can go over the cap by 10% at this time.

I do know that teams don't have to be under until the start of the season but when you only had 14 guys signed and you were already over the cap you probably aren't looking to sign guys to $3 mill a year deals. You are probably looking to get rid of those players (which they have). With the probable loss of Hjalmarsson and what they will end up paying Niemi and filling out their roster they might squeak under the cap for next year.

Good move by San Jose. I think that is good money for a developing young d-man. And it's enough money that the Hawks won't be able to afford to match it.

I hate to see him go, but I think there's noway the Hawks can sign him at that money. $3.5 mil a year is alot of money for a player that has basically played only a season and a half.

Hawks have about $3.6 mil to play with and once they do whatever they are going to do with Huet (AHL,Europe) it will free up another $5.6 mil.

If the deal goes thru it leaves SJ with around $2.6 mil in cap space.

They have about 3.6M sure but they only have 9 forwards, 4 d-men (one being John Scott) and 1 goalie (not named Niemi) signed.

They still need to round out the roster by signing at least 3 forwards, 2 or 3 D-men and Niemi with that 3.6M. NOT going to be an easy task.

Kane/Toews/Hossa
Sharp/Bolland/Kopecky
Reasoner/Brouwer/Stalberg
[plug]/[plug]/[plug] + [plug]

Campbell/Keith
Seabrook/John Scott
[plug]/[plug] + [plug]

Niemi (let's give him 3.125-3.2M)
Crawford?/Richards? (800K-875K) - call the goalies 4M combined. I guess Toivonen is an option as well at 550K

+ 4,157,753 bonus penalty

puts the Hawks at $54,226,590 (this includes burying Huet) leaves the Hawks with 5.17 million to play with.

Those 7 plugs will have to come pretty cheap, the cap hit of a Beach, Skille etc might be too much to promote.

It may have to be some vets that just need a job and are willing to work for near the minimum in the 700K range and hope that no one gets injured.

Why would Chicago be upset for getting a 1st and 3rd pick for a #4 D-man? Bet Chicago laughs all the way to the draft for this one.

Ask Hawk fans about Hjarlmarsson. They have (had?) very high hopes for him.

Plus, San Jose's first and third will be around 26 and 86 - not the greatest picks in what I have been led to understand is not a great draft year.
