Hey all!

FYI!

Star's & Rookies, on 51 Ave NW

&

Delta Sportscards, Westmount Mall

Both of these shops are in Edmonton, BTW!

They will be closing their doors for good on the 31 Jan 2005.

Star's & Rookies is closing and going to his daytime job! NHL Lock out made up his mind!

Delta Sportcards is closing his retail location and is going to concentrate on his eBay account! It's either nhlfan or fannhl. Just look for a bunch of trinkets!

Unfortunately shops closing is the trend everywhere. I guess in Canada you can point to the lockout, but here in Atlanta there have been a few shops close and I don't think the lockout has anything to do with it. As great as ebay and alike are for the hobby, they have really hurt the local shows. I for one seldom buy anything except supplies and wax at my local show. Who needs to pay retail prices for singles when everything eventually shows up on the bay. Anyway, sorry to hear about the shops closing. Mabye after the lockout ends there will be some new ones. :) Mike

haha,
makes sense to me.
The one closing around here is like that,
except he's a bit off, so, there wouldn't be any sale.
Maybe a 10% off the 50% markup,
but, aside from that I highly doubt it.

Although, I'm left wondering what he'll do with all that dead wax he's searched through.
Surely won't open it to get the base cards he knows are in there.

It's always sad when a card shop closes.

I remember as a kid frequenting the card shops and it was always a little wonderland for me.

But eBay surely has hurt the brick and mortar businesses. Also unscrupulous owners that pack search and rip kids off give all the good owners a bad name.

Maybe one day there will be a return to the glory days. Who knows!

hmm, I'll have to check out Star's and Rookies tomorrow on the way home from work to see what's going on. Never really went there much as I like to get things done in the morning on weekends and he didn't like to open before lunch.
I'll check to see if there's any deals to be had (provided I don't forget to stop).

Rob will be missed at S&R, but he was pretty disorganized. He also has a lot of boxes piled up from the early 90s which ate up a lot of space.

Delta, on the other hand, is a completely different story. Overpriced, some cards in the showcases for years - faded autos and cards from being subjected to fluorescent light for 10 years, did I mention the same price tags as well. Not to mention, the boxes of packs out front, which were resealed with cellophane. That definitely sounded the alarm for me not to buy packs, let alone anything else.

Unfortunately, the local hobby shop cannot compete with the internet. I use it to help the collection, but not as the sole source. What fun is it if you can't crack wax with your buddies and hassle them for what they got. Support your local dealer - the good ones are harder to come by these days....

It's not good when shops are starting to close because they are affected by the lockout, A new store opened up in my area right when the lockout started, but he seems to be doing alright.

It is a shame to see stores closing because of the lockout. I can't say that here in Atlanta that is the reason why stores close, they just don't sell hockey here. Funny how the stores I do go to just will not order it, if they can get the product, it's not what I'm looking for. The last dealer I knew of here would order anything I wanted to make the sale. He had to close his retail space because of property management problems and has not reopened. That was a year ago! :(
