In 1995-96 The Playoff One on One card game was released. The Ultra Rare Golds were very tough to pull and were selling for a good amount of money. My hobby peak was pretty much 1995-1998 and I spent any money I ever had on hockey cards. I really wanted to complete the playoff one on one set, although I never was lucky to pull any of the ultra rares on my limited budget.
Just for fun I did some quick research and when the cards were released and I was chasing them in 1996, Macarena was the Number 1 song, Independence Day was the big hit at the box office and Mario 64 for Nintendo 64 was all the rage. Makes it feel like my find yesterday was a long time in the making!
About 10 years ago I seriously began chasing the set and man oh man did I figure out fast that the Ultra Rare Golds are so tough to track down, especially the ones that came from the Starter Decks.
Recently I have been hitting local dealers with my wantlist and FINALLY I got a big hit from a local dealer who knew a guy who had 8 Ultra Rares. We met up yesterday and for the first time EVER I actually saw pictures of these cards. That is how tough they are.
The nice man told me that he is mainly a coin collector but was able to get a bunch of sealed cases of the starter decks for 95-96 Playoff in a big bulk buy and he opened them just for fun years ago.
So here we go...

I also picked up another copy of Jim Paek Ultra Rare Gold in the deal. Wow, I still can't believe that I ended up with these! I need only 4 more Ultra Rares and my set is complete! It's pretty neat to be chasing something for so long and not knowing what to expect because you have never even seen a picture of the cards before.
