Upstanding Member,
Hello everyone,
I decided to start this thread because of the latest Christmas trip to California. In 2015 I was lucky enough to travel a lot for "work". I went to the National this past year Chicago, and I was lucky enough to be able to visit my grandparents in IL four times. By far the most I have seen them in one calendar year since 1983 when my family moved out of IL to CO.
This past year alone, I went to over 40 card shops in CO, OR, CA, WY, SD, ND, NE, IA, MN, WI, NV, and UT.
This last trip I saw the strangest thing ever and I may have it my biggest BV % score ever.
My wife is from SoCal and she is fantastic enough to let me take a day and go card shopping. This is usually the recovery day after the Wine Tasting, Brewery Tour and Universal Studio Days.
There are about 19 card shops within a 25 mile radius of her brother's place according to the Android Card Shop Finder app, but due to California's ridiculous traffic, I could only hit five during that time frame. We went to eight but only five were open.
First the strangest. I go to GW's Sports Cards http://marketplace.beckett.com/Sdwright1_1298 and ask if they have any hockey. Fantastic people. It looks like they were relatively new as the store was way to clean to be a "card shop". They had three people working sorting singles and uploading to the BMP. If I would have done my research, I wouldn't of stopped here because it is hard to "pick" people who I am competing against on Beckett. That is the reason why I don't go to Burbank.
Even though the Kings have won the Stanley Cup twice in the last handful of years, hockey is still the red headed step child of the collecting world in LA. He pulls out three boxes and says "don't worry about the prices on them, we are re working them".
First box, in the first row, I notice that they have a SP Authentic Triple Autograph from 2007-08 of Marleau, Cheechoo and Thornton /25 (almost positive it was those three).
I just pass it up because #1 it is not priced, and #2 it is going to be way out of my bargain basement budget. Second card another triple of those three players numbered out of 25...third card, the same and so one. I stopped and backed up after I counted at least FIFTEEN of those cards.
When I went to inspect them, I believe the Marleau autograph was missing. Like I said I didn't really pay much attention to it just because it was a card I wasn't 100% interested in.
Now I wish I would of taken a picture with my phone just so I had record of it. Long story short, we bought our Goddaughter a rally monkey and a few singles from that shop, but I am pretty sure that they are there still if anyone is interested.
Biggest score (cost of card comparable to BV)
About three hours later we were working our way to her friends parents house for a Christmas party. We were in Santa Ana and found a shop that was close to their house. I am not 100% sure which shop it was as we hit two of the four in the area, but for some reason the Card Pavilion is sticking in my head.
Anyways. Walk in, ask for hockey and was directed to their $.25 box. Begin pulling out some decent cards, Giroux CC rookie, Holtby Victory RC, an Ice Medallion or two, some Frozen in Time cards from 2005-06 Trilogy, not the best stuff, but for $.25 why not. He then said that there were some .10 cards boxes as well.
I flip through one and see that there are some OPC retros, 2007-2010 BAP and masterpiece singles. There were also additional frozen in time cards and a few ultra golds. I ask how much for the box and he said, "if you take all 6 I can do $90.00 for the lot."
I glanced at Darlynn and she gave me the look of, "You know what you're doing, but we only have so much room in the car". So of course I took them. After the party we get back to her brother's house and she wants to go through them. One of the many reasons why I love this woman. Of course she goes to the sleeved section first because she knows that sleeves in a common box usually are the better cards. In the first box she pulls out the Trilogy Glass cards and there was this beauty:

2005-06 Upper Deck Trilogy Crystal #117 Martin Brodeur Frozen in Time 10/25.
The next card was the Lundqvist. All said and done I was able to pull close to 10,000 cards from these boxes that will be heading to Amazon/Ebay/Beckett over the next few weeks. There were 15 total Lundqvist rookies (Victory/Parkhurst and the one Trilogy) 5 Crawford RC, 6 Giroux rookies, 8 Parkhurst Facsimile autograph parallels and so on. But as far as an overall BV score I guess I can't complain about payin 1/3 of a cent for the Brodeur that books at $100
Anyone else have any stories like this?
Happy New Year!
Shawn
