Summer NHL Trades/Transactions

Sigh...Chucky Two Trades strikes again. A 2nd and a 3rd for Braun?? The 2nd was I believe- #41 so not a low second. Fletcher likes his veteran players, but it creates a log jam for the younger defenders. Most likely more deals in the works especially if Jimmy Hayes walks into FA (and that would be a thrown away 5th pick). Jimmy Hayes...Lol Kevin Hayes.

Is Kevin Hayes worth $50mil...I think not. However, he was going to get overpaid. If he can get to a 65-70 point guy who can PK, then I am fine with $50mil. If not, it will just be another one of Chucky's not so great deals. With Holmgren back in the mix in the decision making, we will blow through cap room like crazy.

Flyers got a great player.

Glad the Leafs don't retain any salary in the Marleau deal, and the Subban trade shocked be a bit. I thought he'd be coming back to Canada for sure. Good on the Devils though. The future is looking bright for them once again!

JB is an idiot. The guy needs to put down the phone and not make any trades and not do any UFA signings.

The conditional pick is a 1st, which is protected, and can be deferred to 2021. Didn't he learn anything from Ottawa??

It also says that Nucks are going to try to push for a playoff spot. It seems like everyone outside of team management thinks that we are not a playoff team yet. But JT miller is going to help us make that push!!! Can't wait for more bad UFA signings...wait...I'm jumping off the wagon before July 1st comes.

Why did you think Subban was coming to a Canadian team and which one? Leafs?

I actually thought he might go to the Avalanche or Devils, both have a blueline need and the cap space. The only team in Canada that could probably afford him was Ottawa and I'm thinking he doesn't want to go there?

After the Av's drafted Byram at 4, I really thought they may go for a stacked blueline and get Subban to add to him, Barrie and Makar. But then I wasn't sure who Sakic would give up?

Either way, the Devils are MUCH improved, as are the Avalanche.

Subban to the Devils it is. From a purely team aspect, the Avs are much closer to contending than the Devils (even with Subban). Also, I think the Avs need to spend their money on some depth scoring and maybe goaltending...although I am not sure who is really worth pursuing outside of Bob. For the Devils, it lends an air that they are serious about competing and may help convince Taylor Hall to resign next year.

Blackhawks acquire De Haan, Saarela from Canes for Forsberg, Forsling

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired defenseman Calvin de Haan and forward Aleksi Saarela from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Anton Forsberg and blue-liner Gustav Forsling, the teams announced on Monday.

There are three seasons remaining on De Haan's current deal at a cap hit of $4.55 million. The 28-year-old appeared in 73 games for the Hurricanes in 2018-19, notching 14 points while averaging 18:31 of ice time per contest. However, he underwent shoulder surgery in May and was given a recovery timeline of four-to-six weeks.

Saarela, a 22-year-old center, spent last season with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers, putting up 54 points in 69 games.

In Forsberg, the Hurricanes get some insurance in goal, as both incumbent netminders Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney are pending unrestricted free agents. The 26-year-old Swede is an RFA after posting a .908 save percentage in 35 appearances this past season.

Forsling, also an RFA, played 43 games for the Blackhawks and registered nine points in 2018-19.

Avalanche trade Soderberg to Coyotes

The Colorado Avalanche traded forward Carl Soderberg to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for defenseman Kevin Connauton and a third-round pick in 2020, the team announced Tuesday.
Soderberg has one year remaining on his current contract carrying an annual cap hit of $4.75 million. The soon-to-be 34-year-old enjoyed a productive 2018-19 season with the Avalanche, tallying a career-high 23 goals to go along with 49 points.
Connauton offers a steady presence on the blue line, appearing in 50 games for the Coyotes last season while contributing eight points in a defensive role. He has one year remaining on his current deal with a cap hit of $1.37 million.

The Avalanche own the most projected cap space with $38.9 million to work with and only 13 players under contract, according to CapFriendly.

Free's up more money for Colorado - Give Rantanen a nice (code word for massive) pay raise and gives them some flexibility to chase a free agent or 2.
